    Towing Capacities

    Guy's and Girls,
I need to find out some towing capacities and tow bar requirements for a D1 V8. My cousin has a large boat weighing nearly 3900kg and the Rovers are the only vehicle rated to 4000kg. There are however some issues with tow bar manufacturers and Australian Regulations that I want to clarify for him. His intention is only to tow it short distances (within 100kms of Adelaide). The appeal of the Rovers is they are currently cheap otherwise he would have to go for a truck or F truck. In the manuals it mentions coupled brakes, now I assume this means electric brakes or similar????
Are there any tow bars supplied in Australia that meet these requirements? Reece have indicated that they will only warrant their tow bars to 3500kg. Are they a UK item? I know on my Disco 1 on the plate it did have 4000kg stamped on it but as I was never going to tow anywhere near that weight, did not look into it much and I am sure even though it was a Land Rover item it was made by Reece.
If anyone can fill me in on info especially relevent o South Australian RTA regs so I can pass it on it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

There has been quite a bit of discussion on the forums about towing and ratings in Australia, and what kinds of rig are suited given weight/vehicle/distance/state regulations/etc. IIRC you are limited to 3500kg braked legally and if it weighs more I would strongly advise going for a truck.

100km is a long way to tow. There can be many places in that kind of distance where accidents can happen. I am sure any insurances would be invalidated in that case.

all rovers post series and exempting the freelanders (+maybe the LR4) can tow 4t. The towpack is usually the limiting factor.

on the towpack the biggest limit is usually the towball which usually maxes at 3500kg for a 50mm unit.

some bars are manufactured to take more but must be derated by law due to the towball (you must rate at the weakest link) ring the bars maker and find out, you may be able to get it exempted in writing providing you can prove your going to use a suitabley rated ball/pintle.

I know for the Discovery – the early D1 was 4000kg but ALL discos with ABS (~96 on) have a manufacturers spec of 3500kg and I'm sure it's the same for the Defer and RR. There is some fine print on D2s with coil rear springs which push it down even further. Check the owner’s manual – the towing limit is the lowest of; the car manufacturer specs, tow bar fitted spec and the towball used.

Over 3500kg requires 70mm towball and coupling. Over 2000kg must have brakes on all wheels operated from the driver’s cab.

If you want a rover I would check the earlier Defenders or Range Rovers for the longer wheel base, I towed 3t+ with my then old D1 and it wasn't fun...

No. quote from LR web site, I actually could not find spec for the big RR so this is for the current Defender

Defender boasts exceptional payloads and towing capability of up to 3,500kg for trailers with over-run brakes. It offers serious pulling power whether hauling trailers on and off-road, or reeling and positioning with its powerful accessory winches. Defender's stance, Traction, grip, and dependable power make it a world favourite for towing and winching.

    That is the Manufacturer Spec.

If you go through Redbook you will see the vehicles pre-ABS don't list the towing cap on redBook so check the owner's man - but all the ABS models I looked at were 3500. I think you will not get a new towbar rated at 4000 so look for a car fitted with a towbar when new, I remember my old D1 had an ARB towbar that was plated 4000.

Dave – what does it list in your owner’s manual? Redbook lists the 2000 TD5 Defender X-treme as 3500kg...

Very sorry - You are right. I always wanted an 94 LSE so I keep thinking the RRC is longer.

mines 3.5t but thats limited by the tow pack which belongs on a d90.

(which makes towing 8t trailers probabley something I shouldnt have been doing with it)

I'll have to check the book.
