    Hydrogen Generator

I saw something different today, a hydrogen generator under the bonnet of a Nissan Patrol.
    How to describe it?
Firstly, there was a Stainless steel water reservoir with a clear perspex top.
Into the top of the unit were several bits of plumbing/wiring.
There was a fill point where Distilled water with a bit of BiCarb soda filled the system.
There were 2 electrical connections, 1 Positive and the other Negative.
A hose to vent the Hydrogen and Oxygen from the device.
When it was energised it was immediately obvious that something was happening as there was a great stream of bubbles issuing around inside the box.
Downstream of the vent hose there was a flame trap.
There were other bits such as a heat exchanger up front of the Radiator and a bloody enormous Capacitor to smooth out the current flow, something like that anyhow, I'm not an electrician.
The feller didn't have a heck of a lot of time to chat about it but I did get some pics.

I'm hoping to catch him next week to get some more info if anybody wants it.

There was a short mention of a system like this in Land Rover Owner International a few issues ago, it seems it's all the rage with the boys in Iceland. I think they called it a brown's gas system?

They feed the hydrogen released from the water directly into the inlet manifold. Some of the guys have 6 or more of these boxes full of bubbling water!

Simple electrolysis it seems to me - worth the bother, I have no idea?

No offence intended but as per the other threads on this subject........................................I'm sorry.........it's rubbish..............

Energy in...............energy out + waste heat, that's that way of things.

If it were as simple as that we'd all have one....but I'm saving up for the 2012 hydrogen fuel cell D5.

None taken, I just posted it up as I thought others who had not seen or heard of the Technology might be interested.
In short, I thought I was doing something useful and maybe of interest to others who don't get to see this sort of thing.

i attended a club meeting where a guy (sales rep) came and did a power point presentation on a version of one of these, i personally thought that the theory was plausable but didn't really see the value, (unless you based it off the savings they claimed). They claimed would make any engine as economical as LPG or D Gas, simply by adding minute amounts of highly flamible hydrogen to the air intake of any engine, therefore causing a cleaner, more highly combustable combustion. So you got greater power out of the engine and therefore you either had more power or you used less pedal and therefore use less fuel. Plausible maybe, but at approx 2G for basic system for a car or small 4WD 3.5G for bigger 4WD and small truck upto 7G for Lge truck i think i will wait until i start hearing that the system is great.

If it doeas work then 1 good thing is that it can simply be removed and re-installed to another vehicle (when you up grade).

Doesn't work - Just places extra load on the alternator, which then places extra load on the engine, which requires more fuel - 1st law of thermodynamics. We make hydrogen all the time using electrolysis, as OH&S issues now limit the use of H2 cylinders, but we put in power to do so.

Edit: There's even a wikipedia entry for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley...ater_fuel_cell
