Air con blowing hot and cold

I've had my 94 Disco TDI automatic for a year and a half, and the A/C has been fine, nice and cool all the while.
On a recent trip out of town, I noticed it stopped blowing cold air after sustained highway cruising for about an hour and some hill climbing. The temp gauge also started climbing but after switching A/C off and easing off throttle, the needle came down quickly.
I drove the rest of the day without A/C, including some serious offroading with the temp gauge staying cool.
Next day, tried A/C again and it was business as usual, nice and cool.
When we hit highway and had run for about 30 minutes, it blew hot air again.
It was a hot day, about 35-37 degrees C.
I switched off, drove with windows down about 15 minutes, tried again, and it was cool, for all of 10km, then hot again.
Back in the city, it worked perfectly again.
Am going to send for professional check up in next two weeks but would appreciate any ideas what may be causing this tantrum.
    Thanks.

They cut out when pressure is out of range due to heat build up, You may have a primary problem there. Have the electric fans died?

Or it is bordering on being out of gas ... Suggest you get it serviced

    Thanks for your input.
What "primary" are you referring to? I'm no expert.
The electric fans have a habit of staying on even after I switch off the engine completely ... have not checked whther they still do that, will go do that in the morning.
But wouldn't the air flow at highway speed (about 100km/h) be more than anything the fans could generate?

re the gas, it is plenty cold ... when it works, which is actually most of the time.
Just checked the electric fans, both run when AC on, both stop when AC off, although one stops faster than the other.

I'm fairly sure its carking out for pressure reasons by your discription. Getting To hot due to air flow or cooling system not 100% viscous fan etc, AS Mike suggested gas may be low. Evaporater may be freezing up but I doubt that one.

I'm not an air con gurus but have been known to make old ones on unregistered farm machines work on LPG
The above are the main reasons most play up. Further more will be blockages from rust flakes etc. If you have it checked out you may be up for a new drier, TX valve and re gas at a minimum.

When it stops working does the compressor keep running and pressurized pipe get real hot or does the compressor rattle.

No noticeable compressor rattle but can't tell if running or pipe hot since I did not stop to check, just wanted to get home.
Just ran it at idle for 10 minutes short while ago, no undue noises, all seems well.
Was told it may be stome valve sticking, but that's just another guess.
Will definitely take to AC doctor soon.

Let us know the out come as I'm still learning off others experiences. I'm still banking on a heat related problem at this stage though.

    Good luck with it.

You have a high discharge problem, run a hose through the condenser coil in front of the radiator, make sure there is no restrictions, make sure the thermatic fans are running the correct way(if someone has been playing with the electrics)other than that you may have a discharge hose between the compressor and the condenser or the condenser to the filter/drier (where the pressure switch is) on the liquid line that is kinked or collapsing internally,if so its a job for the auto air guy.
    Cheers Ian (Fridgie)
