    Ignition key won't turn . . . . . .

I have a little problem with my 2003 Disco, both the user key and the spare key won't turn in the ignition. Home is Brisbane, car is stuck in Toowoomba. It's been dropped off at the dealership via a tilt tray.

For a few weeks the key has played up a bit, but on the rare occasion it does it you just jiggle it a bit and it's always turned in a few seconds. Today it just wouldn't have a bar of it. Wife had the spare key so we tried it, no good, we called a helpful chap at a locksmith and he said give a WD40 bath, jiggle it a bit, get it going and then tomorrow take it to the shop. That didn't help either.

A retired but helpful mechanic happened along and proceeded to pull the plastic covers off the steering column, however when he reached for his hammer and cold chisel and said he was going to remove two security bolts that hold the barrel on (they sit right on top of the column and have the top sheared off so you can't easily remove them) I had to stop him. Maybe he could have fixed it, maybe he would have made it worse, but it when he said he had never tried this on a Land Rover but it should work that I just had to ask him to stop.

We're hoping Southern Cross Land Rover have the part in stock, one of the kids needs to be at school, I have to work etc so hopefully it'll be up and running easy enough.

Anyone know if this is a common enough problem or should we expect they won't be able to fix it tomorrow.

Can we just take it to a locksmith or does it have to go to LR ?? Can the tumbler be removed and we just start it with a screwdriver like happened to my old Telstar when it was stolen ? We could hold the key close by for the transponder while it starts ??

Anyone work for w LR dealer that has the part in stock ?

    Thanks in advance .. . . . .

My recollection of this fault on Disco IIs was that the barrel will need to be replaced. We had a few rejigged by a locksmith, but the repair didn't last.

A hammer and chisel is the way to undo those bolts, but you don't have to cut the heads off. A small chisel can be utilised to undo the bolts.

You can remove the electrical switch from the rear of the barrel and turn it with a screwdriver to start the engine, but this won't unlock the steering.

and then you cut a groove in the bolts with a hack saw and refit them with a flat blade screwdriver......
saves you having to replace the bolts.........

Same thing happened to mine today. At the local shops thankfully but still had to tow it home on a trailer. Going to try the inox/graphite powder first. Then go for the rebuild/replace if it doesnt work.

I had this problem about 9 months ago, visited local (Hornsby) locksmith who advised NOT to use graphite or your normal type sprays (WD40 etc) - they stay wet and attract dust. He gave the barrell a spray with 'Super Lube' a multipurpose synthetic lubricant with Syncolon (PTFE). Apparently the spray simply carries the PTFE which coats the tumblers and then the spray very quickly evaporates.

I have not had any trouble since it was sprayed, however, as the barrell is obviously worn I don't consider this a long term fix. I did buy a can of the spray though - about $20.

    Sounds similar to D1 problem
Had my ignition switch rebuilt by lock smith in Toowoomba who has done a few and that was over two years ago now and still feels as good as new

When my TD5 ignition stuck like this, I pulled the key blade out of the plip and was then able to hold the blade with pliers and put much more turning force on it. This got it moving again. The key blade was pretty easy to extract.

I then took the ignition barrell off and ran some electrical cleaner through it. It was fine then, but for good measure I put some graphite powder in after a couple of days.

The ignition is super slick now.

The key blade just pushes back into the plip no problem.

    Cheers, Andy

Well it's all fixed, but no thanks to the Southern Cross Land Rover. I couldn't imagine there could be a worse dealer anywhere in Australia. I was there at opening time and David was so full of excuses and wouldn't even consider allowing a mechanic to spend 15 minutes removing the barrel assembly so a locksmith could do the rest. The car was even bought brand new from them but just like last time I needed a little help form them the guy just sits there in his chair full of excuses. Last time was simply needing the code for the radio after a battery change. LR head office supplied the number in the end. With staff like David it's no wonder LR has such a bad reputation.

Anyway I just wanted to say what a champion Bruce from Century Locksmiths was. He dropped everything, drove to the LR dealer, removed the unit, took it back to his workshop and repaired the unit, then drove back fitted it and I was away in about 1 1/2 hrs.

One of the little brass plates that slide up and down on the bumps of the key was the problem, the spring couldn't pull it out of the way.

Again Century Locksmiths were brilliant and the family is back home in Brisbane again.

I pulled my ignition barrell out his morning and took it to the local locksmiths (Hornsby Locksmiths). Thay just rang me to tell me that its all fixed. They pulled it apart and found that where the plates slide up and down had burred over and was stopping them moving. They cleaned them up and lubed it all up.
    All fixed.
