Sounds like a screaming metal sound???
Take the starter motor out ... and slowly turn the motor over looking at the ring gear .... It sounds as tho you have "carved a tooth" & the ring gear needs changing
Mike

The starter in my 3.5 has been playing up for a while but seems to be be getting a bit worse.
Previously on start the the starter would fire but the cogs would not mesh - on next start the cogs would mesh and the car would start.
More recently this issue continues however on subsequently starts the throw cog on the starter would get out to the ring gear and rattle against it - giving a grating sound but not mesh - next start all is OK and everything meshes and the engine starts.
I was thinking of pulling the starter and solenoid and cleaning everything up and giving appropriate bits a grease.
Is there anything likely to be an issue or something else I should do.
Cheers

Sounds like Mike could be right, but it could also be the bendix drive, and if the starter sounds sluggish it could be either a bad connection (probably earth) and could also be the starter having bad brushes or commutator or brushes or bearings.
I can't remember what sort of bendix drive that engine has, but if it is inertia engagement, it could be sticking. In this case, when cleaning up, never put any grease or oil on the sliding bits. Completely clean it up, and use a little powdered graphite.

Thanks Mike and John.
Mike I hope your wrong but the symptoms do sound like it. Am hoping the starter is not getting an enough ooomph to spin out correctly through the sort of things John said and that the through out gear is just rattling against the ring gear and not actually wrecking it - wishful thinking maybe. It will still start the engine though.
I need to pull the lot out - tomorrows job I think - at least the starter is easy to get too on a 101 through a door in the front wheel arch.
