    Low EGT temps?

I have had my egt gauge on for a while and I can't get the thing over 500 degree's,reading some of the posts running a search some people are backing off as thiers is getting too high at 600+ but for me the highest reading is 520 and that was labouring the thing under load in 5th,around town I'm lucky to get over 300.So what's happening here, underfueling or is it right. Pat

    Hi Pat

Is this a 300TDI measuring at the EGR blanking plate ?

    Possible causes:

    * Do you have the right thermocouple for the gauge (J/K type etc) ?
    * Is the thermocouple probe long enough to poke into the gas flow or is it too short and sits in the shielded EGR void ?
    * Assume the injector pump is stock standard and has not been tweaked ?
    * When you put the ignition on first thing in the morning (prior to starting), does the EGT temperature equal the ambient temp at the time ?

My pump is tweaked and I can get to 700 deg if I try on a hill and towing. My EGT alarm sounds at 650 and I back off then if I haven't already.

The probe is about 60mm long from memory and I angled it downwoulds slightly to get it better centered and everything is stock. It shows ambient temp and is accurate in that regard. How many turns on the stop screw did you do with your tweak?.I'm thinking the low temps might be one of the reasons why I've never had headgasket issues. Pat, bog stock fuelling I could hit 623* going over the range at Murrurundi.

I think you may either have the probe pushed in too far, or you may have to angle it up slightly to get closer to the gas stream as the EGR port is a pocket in the manifold.

Some people reported on LR4x4 that they did need to bend it up to get 'true' readings, unshrouded by the pocket but I've never found that.
If you do bend it use a mandrel with a fairly generous radius.

My pump is stock AFAIK and I get around 370degC at 100k on flat freeway, and around 550 is the highest I've seen it (full throttle uphill in 3rd around 2000rpm). Similar maximum in 4th. Haven't done any towing yet though.

How quickly does your gauge react? Mine drops a few degrees instantly when I lift my foot slightly. I'm wondering if there is a chance that your probe could be touching the manifold inside and affecting the temp? The angle of the EGR port could maybe make that possible.

I was a concerned that my probe wasn't long enough (only 35mm inside the port), but going by how quickly it reacts I'm pretty confident that its OK.

I'd says Overfueling and increasing Boost as higher boost pressure is dropping your EGT. Is your Hairdryer stock or bigger aftermarket.

Mine will quite easily get to +650 if I'm not careful I back off at 680 ish

Edit : or as others have said your Probe mightn't be reading the True Gas Temps

300Tdi Defender with mild injector pump tweaking - the most I can wring out of it is 580 degrees. That's at the top of the Samford Range at 80 - 85 km/h in fifth running about 10psi. Fourth gear at the same speed doesn't seem to change the temperature.

My probe is 6mm diameter and about 50 - 60mm in from the EGR blanking plate, running slightly down from horizontal, which I measured to put the tip about in the middle of the flow. (I could be wrong ) I have a VDO 900 degree analogue gauge. It reacts fast enough that you can see the needle pause as you change gears while accelerating.

Seems to be two schools here, some high some low.The probe I have is thin and reacts very quickly,it never stays still actually and the probe on mine sits into the housing as best I could get it,I'm positive it would be in the gas flow as it is long enough.I've booked it in for a tune at Bosch on monday as it has never been done as I also want the plunger lift set at 1.6mm on JC recomendation. It drives fine so I'm not going to play with it,I'll go with the tune the guys at Bosch set. my new probe does not in the stream......its at 90 degree to the plate

@ 100 it sits around 300 give or take a few degrees

it normally max's out around the 500 mark under load, hopefully there is not much difference between not in the stream and in the stream

My 4BD1T sits around 430C at 100km/h on a flat road. I'd expect the smaller tdi's to be running hotter.

How much boost do they typically produce in those conditions?
