    Strange spanner sizes for toolkits

    Hi all,

Repco are currently doing very good trade discounts on a lot of their hand tools, and I am looking to make up a number of traveling tool kits for various things with wheels. One of them is a "stay in car" tool kit for the Disco.

Can everyone (who can be bothered!) chime in with some of the weird and wonderful spanners and sockets you've needed for jobs on the Disco? Doesn't matter how obscure.

I HATE the way the Disco and Commodore both have fruit salad mixes of AF and metric fasteners in strange places.

Once collated, I reckon it might be a good post for a sticky.

    Thanks in advance!

Superc++p have a 7 piece indian metrinch copy spanner set at $15 - for a set of spanners to stay in the car it's decent value. For sockets, the metrinch 1/2 inch drive set covers most everything.

As for the obscure sizes you'll encounter, it's hard to say not knowing what you'll consider repairing 'in the field' so to speak.

If you haven't got one already, a hub spanner is a good thing, as is a 1/2 inch and 9/16 twelve point socket for the brake calipers.

Of course I can't find the original thread, but somewhere back down the track I think Rovercare or Rick130 suggested a 9/16 socket in 1/4inch drive with a a wobble bar as the best thing for prop shaft nuts.

I ask around every once in a while and get very blank looks, maybe that's just Repco.

If you can find them buy a bunch I'm sure there'll be no end of enthusiasts for a group buy.

Just to echo Mr AB - it's also called a combination thin walled socket and uni joint in either 9/16 or 14mm. Another twelve point ring/open ended spanner in the same size is a good idea too, as the metrinch style isn't the best in the tight spaces of the uni (Just in case you have to take a propshaft off)

I have worked on the odd S1 and D2 Disco and most metric sizes are covered from 8mm to 19mm and a few beyond, There was a post recently about a similar topic. Get as good tools as you can afford and treasure them. I still use tools I bought 30 years ago.

    Streamlining my toolkit.

Obscure sizes alright. 10mm is actually 10.5mm or something near that, I bought one of these sets to leave at our property in the bush - worst investment I ever made. The first spanner open ended spanner I used broke the jaws. The second was just broke in half.

    Champion! Thanks.

My days of buying low end tools are done. I delivered a list of goodies to Repco the other day to the tune of about $500 - about $1000 worth at normal retail prices - so I hope they can get them all.

Years ago a very good friend told me to buy what I wanted to have in 20 or 30 years and buy it now. Life has been better since adopting that policy!
