The current Defender is a ford 4 cyl 2.4L unit out of the transit van.

UK seldom had the big motor, as in the Isuzu, even their RRC's were fitted with 300 tdi's and same in South Africa.

I went through Botswana and most had defender diesels and old peugots and they often had 500k km's on clock.

    Smoky but still going.

Europe has hardly any cars with big motors except for their big Mercs and Bm's. And even than, only the very rich have big donks over there.
the Taxi's which are mostly Mercs all run diesels and same in Africa.

So, are you arguing for Australia to introduce similar taxes to Europe?

Australia is different to Europe if you haven't noticed - distances, road conditions, vehicle uses etc.

I suspect if we knew the reasons why Ford used a 2.4 Litre Transit van engine in the Defender, not many would be what would be applied given other choices for engine swaps here.

If I was starting again, I would seriously consider this engine. The version used in Isuzu NLR and NNR trucks is the 4JJ1-TCS, 110 kW at 2800 rpm, 375 Nm at 1600 rpm. Though the 4BD1T's lack of dependence on electrics is a strong point.

Physically similar overall size and weight to a 4BD1T, but smoother and more refined with better power and torque (comparing stock to stock).

I suspect the electrics from the Isuzu truck might be easier to isolate to the engine, but I'm not sure. There are chip performance upgrades available.

How about a Mazda SLTI35 which is actually a Perkins motor. They are a fan of these in Land Rovers in the UK, no computers either.

I also read awhile ago about a stroke kit from the US for the 300tdi which took it to 2.8. This was even before the Hs2.8tgv was available. This thing was producing 170bhp and 270lbft of torque (with a bigger intercooler fitted) and what I like the idea of, is everything still being a Land Rover part - except for the crank and rods.

    cheers

If I ever have to rebuild my 300tdi, this sure looks like an attractive alternative

Where do I say that or even come close to saying that?

Bush65, I just pointed out what I found was going on whilst actually being there, living and breathing and seeing what is going on 1st hand. Speaking to locals and driving the cars etc.
Where do I even mention taxes?

I am not a fan of the Isuzu but do agree its a good motor, especially if you are driving a small truck.

Transport and shipping cost would be prohibitive, Regards Frank.
