    2.5 or 3 inch Exhaust for TD5.

After starting a thread looking for an exhaust shop some one said 3" may be worse? to big.

My td5 has a big tombie remap and 25psi of boost so it's not your average td5.

So does any one have a dyno read out or anything to add.

Not really worried about how loud it is . Just really chasing extra HP. and ok maybe the sound

so not bothering with mufflers to start with

    The system will be mandrel

    Cheers Ben.....

The standard system is already 2.5" roughly and 3" reportedly have been giving good gains.

The system whichis meant to be good is the Taipan XP or whatever its called with the Vortex mufflers. You may need to google them.

    Yes I have heard that.

    They are very costly though.

Nearly twice the price of a custom system from local shop.

Saying that though the the one from local shop does not inc a mufler.

    not that i want one

No probs, which spec shocks did you end up getting?

With the 2.5" system, I really don't think you will get anything out of it by remaking a new system. The bends in the standard system are very well formed and the mufflers are big. If you're going that size, then I'd just remove the centre muffler - sounds cool like that and check out the flex which can be a big restriction also - see Graeme re this, he has the good tech on it. To remove the centre muffler is about $50 and I'm not sure re the flex.

duplicating that in 3" would also be good and relatively cheap - no mufflers is still pretty loud even though it does have the turbo, although the turbo does admittedly sound awesome like that!

I have been quoted from around 550-750 for 3". Does that sound about right?

That type of cost doesn't surprise me, but if he goes gunbarrell straight under the tray it'll be cheap. I've just seen and read your exhaust shop thread. I think that the 3" system will be excellent, especially with 25psi on the turbo - the freer it flows the better. Something I noticed with my V8 ute which also has a gunbarrel straight exhaust that runs straight through the PTO ports (does have a front/mid muffler though) is I tend to think it works a bit like a trumpet or a didgeredoo.
    Cheers

Hey felllas. Ive heard that there are large benifits to fitting the vortex muffler. Supposedly it keeps the air spinning out the exhaust preventing air travelling back up the exhaust into the engine. By fitting a large bore exhaust with no muffler, super heated air travels down the centre of the exhaust. Towards the edge of the exhaust the air cools down. As the pressure outside the tip of the exhaust is at 1 bar, it actually forces cool air along the edges of the exhaust back in the system. Supposedly not good for diesels, particularly turbo diesels. Was told this last week by my mechanic. Food for thought anyways.

IVe done some cross sectional measurements for a couple of the ricers on base to help solve the which is better.

on a 90 degree bend a mandrel bent 2.5 inch exhaust has the same cross section as a normally bent 3 inch.

the 3 inch normal is cheaper than a full 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust.

my thoughts for the td5 based on the flow rates from the rice boys turbo petrols and a maintenance POV are thusly

I like the higher velocity of gas out of the 2.5inch mandrel better than that of the 3 inch normally bent in theory its got less back pressure on the turbo than the normally bent 3 inch.

the 3 inch exhaust gets a mite close to some componants for my liking and does make changing the oil filter a bit of a pita.

Lara and Big Red both run about the same times and HP, big red does it through pure brute force Tombie Insane chipping where as lara achieves it through a very mild chip, bigger intercooler and an excelent 3 inch exhaust system

Since Im home today and tomorrow if you like you can come for a run in big red to see how the big chip runs on a normal exhaust and intercooler (Money ran out for the upgrades due to some bad luck with the house and some illnesses in the family)

While I still have her your welcom to come and benchmark your vehicle off of big red when you do mods as you need to.
