Just saw a nifty idea being sold out of Coffs Harbour on ebay or via his web site not up to the price but my stone guard is in need of a overhaul. Having it flat seems to make a lot of sense. What do you think?

Not a new idea...

Adventure Campers was using this style of system from Day 1..

And may I say it works brilliantly... All debris is shoved under the towed object with no chance to bounce back the vehicle in front.

We had a home made version in 2004 for the Simpson Desert, you can juuuuuuust see it in the pic.
$500 is a lot when it's not hard to make a simpler style yourself.

He has just copied a 'Stone Stomper' and charged a few bucks less for what looks like a poor quality copy with a couple of variations.

I have an Adventure Camper Trailer and the stone guard supplied is similar except that it connects to a cross bar attached to the tow coupling. This means that there is no gap even when cornering and that the guard must have elastic connections.

I have found that it works very well and it is easy to deploy/attach. The light brown flap at the front stays with the car when the trailer is unhitched as it covers the cross bar which bolts to the tow coupling.

I ran a Stone Stomper up the oodnadatta track then some more dirt to give it a work out. It worked well. I needed to bend the front bar up a little after I found the very outside edge of the trailer got sand (stone) blasted back to bare metal.

Must mention that along with the mesh and bar he sent all brackets, screws and even a socket to use in a eletric screw driver for installing the brackets on the trailer.

The hamering the edge of my trailer got untill I adjusted the front bracket made it plain this was worth its cost. You could make your own. The whole kit and efficent design was worth the money. 10/10 from me.

Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of the full-width low mudflaps as stone guards? I tow a trailer regularly and have a small caravan too so a guard that is suitable for both would be preferred, but I suspect this style will increase fuel consumption noticibly.

I've just replaced the distorted mudflaps that I fitted 2 years ago but the new ones don't really do any better job as the mudflaps are too close to the rear wheels and there's no bodywork behind the wheels to catch the stones either. 60 kph lowered to access height isn't very fast but any faster and the stones bounce off the angled stone guard fitted to the trailer and hit the tailgate. The trailer stone guard worked well behind the D2 but not the D4.
