Faultmate and Netbook for P38A

If someone was to offer a bundle of a FaultMate MSV2 and a preconfigured netbook PC for sale in Australia, would that be of interest to you guys?

I could also bundle the custom OBDII cable for Storey Wilson's EAS Unlock Suite and a configured copy of his software on this laptop, plus the USB-to-serial adapter, along with some instructions for getting it all to work.

Sorry Moderator (Ron) if this is too sales-like... I'm just wanting to find out if I buy a few units of each and get a reasonable discount, if there will be enough interest among P38A owners to warrant the investment.

The more IT-minded folks will probably prefer to do it themselves (I did), but this is for those folks who don't want to stuff around with the IT aspects of getting the FaultMate and EAS Unlock bits to work with their P38A.

Those of you who know me, know I'm not a sleazy sales guy. The new HRA is about getting useful stuff to other enthusiasts at a reasonable price. Sure, we need to make some profit to cover operating costs such as the web site (eCommerce coming soon, eh Willem?) and buying lots of stuff (US and UK shipping is unbelievably expensive at the moment) to minimise shipping delays and costs to customers, but both Andy and I are not quitting our day jobs yet .

If there are other useful things/products Andy and I can do, please reply or PM me.

Cheers, Paul.

FWIW re. shipping... check out costs for a "part load" ... as I understand it, your bits and pieces are loaded under a single tracking number with others' parcels and the cost tumbles...e.g. my viscous coupling (a few Kg) was delivered in 4 days (door to door) from the UK for less than $30 whereas some bits and pieces from another UK supplier, approx same weight/volume cost around $90...because they were sent as an individually tracked item...
The cheap rate was through UPS, the exxy one through DHL...
BTW.. excellent ideas!
If you are going to get stuff from the UK could I suggest you expand your market into the (larger) D1/D2 customer base as well...

Thanks Colin - 4 MSV's are in-transit now, and have bought a candidate laptop. Will see how the testing goes.

Cheers, Paul.

Hey Dave - target price is less than $1500 for the following kit:
  • Netbook laptop with in-car power supply
  • USB-to-serial convertor (configured)
  • FaultMate Nano (upgrade to Extreme for $100)
  • Latest version of BBS Vehicle Server s/w installed
  • EAS Unlock Cable
  • EAS Unlock Suite installed and configured
  • my time to get it working and provide on-board and hardcopy instructions
Have tried this successfully on a couple of netbooks so far. Preference for netbooks is Dell or Acer. Windows 7 is a dog on the Atom processor but XP is ok.

As these are purpose-built laptops, I will probably ditch the eval versions of antivirus software and MS-Office. Thinking I will install AVG and leave MS-Works installed, and it will be up to the customer to install any additional software if required. I will ship them fully patched with the latest security and o/s updates.

Still a work in progress as my son just "stole" my preferred netbook for his Uni work as he broke his last one, and all I've got to play with is a Dell Mini running Win7... everything runs ok, but so slow.

Cheers, Paul.

FWIW : running latest Vehicle Explorer (Faultmate SV) on a HP mini (10" Atom 1.6GHz) (XP Home) with a USB-Serial converter and it performs very well.

Also loaded RAVE , EAS Unlock and most of the P38 "how to" tech stuff from Range Rovers.net

cheers
