Engine oil, not gear oil.

Using Castrol 20W-50 for now.
I have a feeling the gearbox fluid was possibly some sort of auto transmission fluid. I have heard of this being used in LT-95's before, either way it now has fresh fluid and will get another lot after a run. The running previously was limited to the driveway so if it is naffed it was probably done before I owned it.
One of my plans when the 101 is on the road is to source a second LT95 and rebuild it with all the goodies, one to have a good LT95, and two because I want to rebuild a gearbox.
I need to know and not talking about the gearbox, just the transferbox?
Is the viscosity of engine oil correct for the transfer box especially for long trips in the heat, and is not using a oil without a extreme pressure rating (EP), wouldn't it be detrimental to the working surfaces of the teeth of the gears or is there a issue of electrolysis with the thrust washers in the centre diff?
Looked up the Castrol Australia site; http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/default.asp
for a LAND ROVER Defender Series, 2.5 Litre Turbo Diesel, LT77 Man., 4x4 (1992-1995)
4WD TRANSFER
CASTROL MANUAL VMX-M 75W-85
4WD DIFFERENTIAL
CASTROL AXLE EPX 80W-90
Extreme pressure, multi-purpose gear oil designed for the protection of heavily loaded steel gears. It is recommended for use in differentials, gear boxes and steering gears of passenger cars, light trucks, farm tractors and earthmoving equipment
.
A lighter viscosity engine oil may be correct for infrequent slow speed trips at city speeds where the temperatures hardly get hot.

From that same Castrol Australia site,
MANUAL TRANSMISSION
CASTROL TRANSMAX TYPE F
An automatic transmission fluid designed for use in older (pre-1982) Ford vehicles and some early model European and Japanese cars, particularly those requiring Ford M2C-33G fluids.
Service Refill Capacity: 2.7 Litres.
See note 417 below.

With LT77 manual transmission. For severe applications or towing use CASTROL SYNTRANS 75W-85.

The 101 gearbox and transfer case is a LT-95.
Yes, there does seem to be some gear oils out there that may be fit for purpose in a LT-95, however, from experience, one cannot assume "It's a gearbox, it must use gear oil."
It is a rather expensive lesson.
Arthur - KISS applies - the spec for gearbox and transfer is engine oil - it is cheap and it works.
There are of course other oils but are not specified. People have tried other oils and come to grief with dead gearboxes or tfr cases.
I could understand if there was an issue with engine oil bit there isn't so why change.
My 101 has it in both, gear change - hi/lo change are all smooth - low noise - it works.

Agree with Garry 100%. And same here - I use the same stuff all the way through.
Well I'll put on my contrary hat now.
For years '60-'80 we use the one oil in all our machinery on the farm, the oil of choice then was Caltex Delo 200 20W-40.
Had no problem's at all with Tractor engines, gearboxes, Land Rover engines, gear/transferbox and Holden engines, etc.
The only other oils used were, EP90 for the diffs and a oil designed for the milking machine vacuum pump.
The two stroke engines never died with this oil mixed in their fuel neither.
Anyway this is getting off the 101 track so I'll go back to watching closely various threads.
.
I don't know about tractors etc but I do know a little about the V8 and the LT95.
Engine oil works and I have not heard of failures using it but I have heard of failures using other oils - it is not worth the risk as engine works so well.

Just an FYI for those watching, if you look at a 110 3.5l/lt95 on the Castrol website it shows engine oil for the gearbox and transfer, but the modern engine 15W-40 rather than the standard 20W-50. I did do a check recently and Castrol, Valvoline, Penrite, Nulon all recomend engine oil for the lt95 combo's (the websites all appear to use the same type of tool for selection though) . I'm surprised that the major oil manufacturers haven't recommended anything else yet, especially seeing as how much more they charge for the gear oils.
I'm running Penrite 80W-90 in the diffs and steering box.
