Stuee's 101 Rebuild

My wheels came from AJ and I asked for exactly the same offset on the wheel on the inside as per standard with the extra width to the out side oof the wheel.
AJ gets standard wheel centres cut out..........ie standard wheels which you supply are chopped up.
The standard centres are then welded into a single piece off the shelf rim which has no chance for leaks though the rim as it is one piece.
I have 6 wheels now done this way without trouble.
Having the extra width to the out side of the rim used with a larger diameter tyre keeps the kingping \ scrub radius very close to standard.
The set up on mine has been without trouble and fits well within the ex Aussie army mud flaps ect.

This was originally what I was looking at doing but the local guy (Summerville Engineering) wasn't sure he'd be able to do it with the centres in the original rims so I jumped at the opportunity to get the JC rims. I believe Eastern Wheel works is who AJ uses as when I spoke to them on the phone they have done a number of rims for 101's before and were of the opinion that the new outer rims that Summerville use would probably not work with the original 101 centres. I guess the industry is quite small and they must know what each other are doing.

When I visit Summerville in the new year I plan on taking an original and JC rim in and see what can be done. I may get the originals modified if possible and sell on the JC rims to someone who doesn't have disk brakes.

The JC rims have a smaller diameter centre than the originals as the rim itself on the JC wheels are stepped down quite a bit in the middle, this is why clearance is so tight.

Thanks Ian. It should be okay for a few days or week or so on the jack-stands. I guess I'll be hoping it doesn't rain too heavily but that is at least a little unlikely. Stuart offered to bring his removed ones down but I told him not to bother if it's only for a week - it's not like I can use it to commute to work anyway:(. He was only going to borrow two, as he only has the issue with the fronts because of the disks on the front of his 101, but I suggested it's probably better to take the full set.

Just got back from the engineer and now have all my paper work.

I needed to put some straps in that tie the seat frames to the chassis as seen below, now only a couple of minor items and its ready for pits first thing Monday morning (literally booked in for 7:30!). Was reasonably easy to do except drilling one hole in the wrong place and cutting one strap too short and having to re-make it, both due to rushing things when I got home in the evening from work. All good now, the straps are 50x3mm mild steel (galvanised lengths from bunnings in this case), and use 12mm 8.8 bolts to fix to the chassis and frame, all specefied by the engineer.

The rims I borrowed of John B have tons of clearance so they should be all good, Ill keep my spare in the back to demonstrate that they are all new rims and no dodgy things done to get the clearance.

Already thinking about what's next, apart from getting my own rims modified, and the obvious items are a stereo, cup holders and also I got a 12v fan to try out. I'm thinking all these things will be incorporated into some type of console that sits on the engine cover and can be quickly removed, one for convenience accessing the engine and two for security. If anyone has any good ways of installing a head unit and speakers though I'd be keen to seem them.

Already planned how my second battery will be fitted so that will hopefully come early next year some time.

edit* also the rear wheel arches will be getting a pressure wash and paint to bring them up to standard of the rest of the vehicle, while also touching up the bits of bitumen coating hat have since peeled off.

I really don't see how those strips of will aid in safety but if that is what needs to be done so be it. Shows what a stupid system we have at times.

I see you have pop rivetted your wheel arch extensions without any washers or reinforcing metal strips. Over time the rubber will pull over the pop rivet heads. After you have sorted your rego issues etc - I suggest you remove the rivets and redo it with a reinforcing strip of gal steel or aluminium strip - or large washers to prevent the rubber pulling over the rivets.

Good with with all - I would hate to go through it all again with my 101.

The engineer said something along the lines of the ADR's simply keep the dead bodies within the car, doesn't make it any safer because a crash big enough would probably be fatal.

The wheel arches are the bushman flexy flares and fitted as per their instructions (self tappers in this case). I don't like them (the flares that is). Ultimately I'd like to fabricate some sheet metal ones up but its likely I will eventually get conveyor belt rubber and fit them as you suggest.

I definitely don't want to go through this again any time soon. Can't wait till its registered.

Ill give you a shout after I finish at pits. Ill add in your place on the permit for a quick stop. If all goes well the next job is to find where my custom plates have got to since the Morley DOT centre closed down :eek: and get there asap to get the rego sorted.
