Well got the engine cover off and immediately found the adjuster for the throttle cable loose at the engine. I'll have to fasten it down with some loctite this time. there doesn't appear to be any lock nuts or similar.

I've also been putting off a job from early on where I need to grind a bit of the manifold away. I bought a generic linkage to replace the broken linkage between the two carbs, this is a wider diameter than the original and can bind on the manifold. I adjusted the throttle up to stop the binding as I thought it was going beyond the max travel anyway, now I suspect its actually been preventing the throttle opening fully.

ALso, how often do others find they are refilling the pots on the carbs? Mine seem to need refilling quite often but I'm not sure if I'm overfilling (I fill right to the top) and the excess is merely being pushed out or if there's an obvious leak somewhere.

    Cheers

No loctite or grinding needed, flipped the linkage rod to the side closest to the front and it clears everything now, and managed to get some spring washers over the throttle cable so hopefully they help there.

I need to top up the oil pots, and while I'm there I need to tidy up the ignition leads on the passenger sides as they don't have any cable management on them, then I'll take it for a test run down the freeway to mum and dads to see if I've got any more speed out of it

Well I can easily hit 100kmh now. Cruises and holds at 80-90 very comfortably and I'm sure will use fuel far quicker than it did before. I filled up on the way home and from that little squirt and offroading last weekend I'm getting around 37l/100km

I also saw the temp needle move off 82 deg for the first time, from what I could tell it got up to around 87-90ish which wasnt too bad. I'm gonna take it for a spin to work tomorrow, it wont be such a chore sitting at 95kmh now

Great news. Do an 'economy' run (I use the term loosely) out on the open road. Playing off road isn't a good check of that at all.

Temp wise, I've see mine hit 100 while claiming a steep hill with a trailer on - on a 36 degree day, but it drops straight back to 82 when I went down the other side, so I know my cooling system works ok. In fact, I would be more confident driving the 101 in the heat than I would the RRC.

    Yeah, yeah, rub it in....

I get around 20L/100 when driving gently with the trailer on, with no overdrive. Goes up to over 25L/100 when I'm thrashing along at 110 - no trailer, with the overdrive engaged.

    I don't care about fuel consumption. I drive a 101.
