Right sleepy, since we have met the owner of this 101 and he lives locally I will offer to drive down for a fee and get to visit my daughter at the same time

Or use Car Transport Australia|Moving Cars|Interstate Car Carrying|Vehicle Transport

which is what we used to bring the defender up from Melbourne

There you are Sleepy, get Mrs HH to pay you a fee for the use of the 101 (not much because they're transporting the 101 for you) and you'll have it soon.

Nah - two would be Ok - did Canberra to Melbourne and back in one day in April in my 101 - 1400km. And did Hungerford (north of Bourke) to Newcastle 1000km in one day last year.

Easy peasy - especially as the Green one has a 3.9 and and cruise at a higher speed. when you get tired have a snooze in the back.

Sleepy is now a 101 owner - I think he needs to toughen up .

In 2009, I did Coffs Harbour to Melbourne in 23 hours straight in a Series 3 Diesel at 80kmh! MY HEARING IS STILL RECOVERING!
I imagine this would be a little easier.

Thanks for the offer Mrs HH, I have a quote from the lead Mick_M gave me and I think I'll go with that.

Ok, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to what mileage I should expect out of a 3.9 in a 101? Driving gently of course.

I doubt the 3.9 will be all that different from a 3.5 is concerned but you should do it a little faster and hang on a bit better up hill.

Cruising at 90kph on petrol I will get 14mpg (about 21l/100km) but more realistically about 12mpg - the faster you go, exponentially the more fuel you will use - I regularly see 8-10mpg. I have seen 16 mpg but the gods have to be with you.

Aerodynamics and whether you have a headwind or tailwind come into the mpg equation. For the 3.5 the sweet spot seems to be about 85kph as far as fuel consumption goes so I would expect a couple more for the 3.9.

Have you got LPG?? If so reduce by about 25%.

A standard 12v 3.5 101 V8 is pulling 89kw in good nick and a fuel injected 3.9 is about 135kw so a carbied 3.9 with 101 exhaust manifolds (assumption here) is probably putting out say 110 - 120kw - still a lot more than the 3.5 (I assume similar increases in torque) so your onroad performance should be quite good even if top speed will not increase all that much - you should manage up to 130kph but the 101 rumble from the front driveshaft will make you want to keep speed down a bit.

Lots of good information here in the UK 101 club - they had lots of spares but you have to be a club member but you can use the basic functions of their forum without joining the club.

Cool, And here I was thinking 90kmh would be a good speed ...I can only imagine doing 140kmh in a 101. I did 130kmh* in the 90 once! Bit of a girly when it comes to driving fast in a Land Rover.

Thanks for the info garry . I was guessing about 20l/100km so wasnt too far out.

yes I have done an intro on the 101 club forum, will join in Aug....(get a full year that way !)

    * I think that must have been in NT as you would never exceed 110kmh in Victoria.
