Uses for a 101/ FC/ Landrover.

Yep, I've done little to mine. Probably explains why they are all off the road.
The one on a club permit (in Garry's picture) developed a leaking front wheel cylinder. I've used this opportunity to replace all front wheel cylinders and the brake fluid reservoirs. I am also changing to silicone brake fluid.
Not a particularly difficult job so far but, like you Garry, I do quite a few weekly kilometres. I get little time to play with the toys.
I'm up to the bleeding stage. There are a number of things that should be done carefully so I am taking a little time to do this.

It has had it's little issues but nothing major. And, of course, it's heaps fun to drive.
I think it's the one I'll take it to Corowa in 2019.

Been running silicone fluid in my 101 for many years now.
Never had a problem bleeding it and when I was running standard front brakes, I seemed to be getting longer life out of the wheel cylinders and the transfer from reservoir to reservoir was stopped with silicone fluid and the use of a quad ring seal in the master cylinder instead of the ones supplied in the current repair kits.
I also don't have the paint lifting near the reservoirs on the dash board.

You don't find the pedal too spongy?

That was always the downside of silicone fluid, its compressible.

Never been a issue and never noticed the difference after swapping from one type of fluid to the other on many different vehicles, old and modern.
I usually find a crook master cylinder or other problem will show up pumping the brakes to bleed them and if thats the case the silione fluid will get blamed.
There is alot of BS around about silicone fluid.
The worlds biggest truck and vehicle user has been using it for over 30 years.
The US army.
Use the purple stuff regardless of brand is made by 3m.
Rubbish chinese stuff I believe is some other colour.

My 101 is still going strong.
It badly needs new paint as the old olive drab is flaking off after 30 years.
There is not hurry to do this as its all alloy or gal underneath.
It is seeing less use these days as the farm has been sold and I have other military vehicles and projects I play with.
The last camping trip I did Two simple mods which surprised me how much it improves my type of camping out of the 101.
I have always in the past slept on the floor, have fridge, food boxes around the out side of the cargo area .
Being a soft top with elastic rope it's easy to reach in from the outside of the vehicle and get what you need.
With very little work I fitted a army stretcher to hang from the side and hood bows.
I leave my bed made up.
I can leave a chair set up in the back too to make it easy to get in and out of bed.
Also so I can sit in the chair with the bed set up inside the 101 and get dressed, eat dinner if raining or sit in front of a gas heater as the floor space is free.
I can can fit another bed/ stretcher to the other side for a second person to sleep.
Being army type stretchers.....they fold up to a thin bundle.
The set up I have allows that just by sliding two light chain loops off the handle of the stretcher, and the stretcher will very quickly fold up to the side of hood frame work.
This is fantastic when I use the 101 for carrying motor bikes or fire wood..
The only problem is the army stretcher is narrow to sleep on.
The whole lot is easy to remove and no permanent mods are made to the vehicle.
The other other mod is changing the hinge design of the lower side gate forward hinge to let it open without removing the top side gate out of its hinges.
I added quickly removable light chains so the lower side gate when opened can be used as a small table or to access gear from inside the 101s front cargo
area floor.
I have seen this done before, but usually if the lower side gate is made to open with out the upper side gate removed the upper side gate becomes unable to be opened, unless removed from its hinges completely.
The bottom lower slide gate table is perfect to slide out a small gas burner stove from inside the 101 while pulled up on the side of the road for a cuppa.

Hey Ron, I didn't realise you couldn't open your bottom side doors with the top ones in place - I have always been able to do that so I assume mine were modified by a previous owner.
