A bit blast of easystart (or start ya bastard or whatever you have out there) into the inlet whilst cranking will have a couple of potential effects, and at very least should have the thing cough, splutter and run for a few seconds.

If you can do that then there's. some potential of the thing taking up running on its own.
I haven't used easy start or anything from what I've read they say don't use ether but try a squirt of WD 40

It was 43 deg in the shed today so should have started without even cranking

    You might be right there?

Can't say I've ever had a diesel running on WD40, it doesn't burn well enough or a start.

Easystart isn't a permenant solution, but I have found that easystart can be a useful 'tool' for getting awkwar engines to bleed bleed everything through and run on their own fuel, if nothing else it'll be doing at least twice the speed the starter can turn it at, and for a lot longer.

If you can have an assistant handy they leave a couple of the pipes cracked -one on each bank perhaps- and split the jobs between yourselves.
One of you needs to hold the throttle right open, and have a spanner handy for the injector pipes, whilst the other controls the starter and the easystart. It'll either have it running like a sweetie, or pronounced a complete dud.

Pull the air pipe after the turbo and spray it in there.

I've just realised how terrible a play on words my comment about the WD40 was, that deserves a groan at very least...

After a couple of busy weeks back at work, raging bush fires, heat and humidity thought I should move forward with the 101.
decided to take out the diesel re fit a 3.5 rover and re visit the 6.2 Chevvy later on when its a runner.
Figured the engine and box was going to weigh best part of 500kg so knocked up a lifting beam to straddle my 2 post hoist, chucked some straps around it and out it all came.

Bit of a squeeze past the seat boxes but the passenger side has all the spot welds drilled out of the top sheet so it can flex.

Split the gearbox off the engine ready to go on the 3.5.
Having a good look in the massive void that's left inside the 101, everything for the petrol engine still seems to be present and correct, the wiring all looks useable, still has all the vacuum pipes and coil. I removed the radiator and oil cooler to clean and check. The rear brake pipe is damaged, don't know if I`ve done it lifting the guts out or if it was like that before but will replace that and the brake hoses and heater hoses while there is plenty of space to work. the hand brake cable is broken so will sort that too. other than that I am pretty pleased with the overall condition. The chassis is solid and rust free.
just have to rummage through the box of bits that came with it to get everything together to fit the petrol v8.

A good time to get the degreaser and pressure washer out as well.

Pity the diesel didn't fire, but you will always have something in the corner to play with now when you get some free time...

It looks like a reasonably un-intrusive install with very little modified to fit the chev diesel. Why not drop in a 4.6 since you have the engine out

I know what you mean about busy with work. With the wedding deadline removed I'm now looking at trying to get mine road registered before the turnaround in late April and even that will be pushing it.

Main reason is I have a 3.5 v8 didn't want to spend too much on a motor until I've fully explored the chevvy but wanted to get it up and running and registered and then decide what to do engine wise based on how it will get used. If I go for petrol long term I would probably stroke a 3.9 injected motor and fit an auto to try and keep parts common to my rangy comp truck.

Sounds like an awesome idea and much better than that poxy diesel!

If I had a 101 with all that load-space, I think I would go for the 9.35:1 pistons; a very big LPG tank; Megajolt ignition, or Megasquirt if I wanted dual-fuel and revel in the sound of a real engine!

    Cheers Charlie

managed to get a few hours of shed time on the weekend and it was the 101`s turn. Got all the bits together to fit the 3.5 V8, bolted it all together and dropped it in. There is so much more room around it compared to the chevvy. The Engine I`ve fitted is a rangy one so I will have to remote mount the oil filter and fabricate a mount for the gear stick. I just noticed the rocker covers will need swapping side to side to put the filler neck in the right place for the engine cover.
I replaced a few brake lines and took all the heater pipework out while the engine was out. Struggling to find 7/8 hose elbows for the heater locally. Also the handbrake linkage was seized and has cased the cable to break, are these available or do I have to get one made up?
