    Steering Wheel

So I went camping in the 101 last weekend - and the final morning my hands got all sticky with black residue from the steering wheel..

I believe that it's a common problem with Series steering wheels - I am not sure if it's moisture in the air, but I've never experienced it in the 101 before.

Looking at the 101 - the paint had certainly worn off over the years:

I gave the steering wheel a light sand:

And here is is sunning itself - after 4 coats over the day:

The plan is to let it dry properly/harden and re-install it next weekend.

    Hi All,

A small update on the 101... He's got new boots. These are the same ones that Homestar has on his 101, and Ben from QLD has on his.

I spent a lot of time trying to find an original size tyre, but there just isn't anything out there....

These have been fitted (plus 2 spares) for an upcoming trip that I have in August.

I have a few other things in the pipe-line for the 101 also - but mums the word until I get them done!

    Bit of an update

    Hi All,

The 101 is going through a bit of an update in preparation for a big trip in August.. Last post was wider wheels & new tyres.

This update - the roof rack has been removed. I never, ever used the roof rack because it was simply to high up there. Removing the roof rack also means that the old drivings lights (rarely used) got removed, and so did the CB aerial.

I was amazed at how heavy the roof rack was - there was the frame, 2 x ammo boxes, and the driving lights. The 101 is now not as tall, some weight is gone, marginally more aerodynamic, and ever so slightly less top heavy. The main benefit is that it isn't as tall (I do need to re-measure it!)

CB Aerial has been moved & a curved light bar installed.

    Anyway - here's some pics:

I still have more things to attend to:

    * Relocate the blinker stalk (from RHS to LHS) - as I have found that I sometimes bump it with my right knee when braking.
    * Relocate the drivers door handle - same again, keep bumping it with my knee.
    * Tidy up the passenger mirror.. Ahem
    * Work on a system for the 2 x rear spares
    * Multiple shake down runs
    * Full service before the trip

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Bit of an update

    Hi All,

So another small update - one of my spot lights located on the nudge bar was dead, and it was going to cost some $ to fix it.

I had always had a minor concern that the two x spot lights restricted airflow to the radiator - so I made the decision to remove them and replace them with a small light bar..

I also replaced the indicator stalk - the old one was tired and had a short in it..

Oh - and I've had power steering and front & rear disc brakes installed as well.

I still have a small list of jobs that I am working through - is a Land Rover ever finished?

    Cheers,
    GG

    Small Update

    Hi All,

So I ticked off a few more odd jobs on the 101 on the weekend...

    New indicator stalk installed:

I moved the door handles (on both sides) back - giving more knee room.

I had a bracket fabricated for the mirror arm > onto door bracket. My bracket had completely split and couldn't be welded (it was some kind of cast aluminium by the looks of it). While I was at it - I fitted new pinch weld onto the mirror head (it previously had electrical tape holding the glass on)

And lastly - removed the awning. I know that a lot of people love awnings but the awning that was on the vehicle was difficult to set-up (due to the height of the vehicle), and I have only used it 3 times in 6 years... I figure a little less weight on the vehicle isn't such a bad thing. I left the awning brackets on because (a) they are pop-riveted on, (b) also glued on, (c) I am worried that there is no paint behind the brackets... SWMBO rekons that we can hang towels on the left over brackets

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Minor Mods

    Hi All,

I've had some minor modifications done to the 101 while we can't use it due to lock down...

Firstly - some rust was found on the rear bumper, which has been repaired:

Next - the side steps have evolved over time from:

    a) Plastic steps
    b) Wooden steps
    c) Steps attached to the side door - but we discovered that they didn't function as well as hoped, when we tested them at Corowa earlier this year.
    d) The new set-up:

Next - these have been added for the passenger and driver:

And lastly - a common modification to most 101's - I now have some more foot room for my size 14 feet...

I dual wheel carrier is also underway....

    Cheers,
    GG.

    Minor Update

So the 101 is slowly taking shape..

Here is the new design side step:

A close up of how it attaches to the side of the vehicle:

    The upper mounts:

    The lower bracket:

And the beginning of the first rear wheel carrier - that also converts into a table...

    Minor Update

So the side steps for the passenger and driver have now been powder coated and installed.

I am very happy with them. Note - the steps should be very sturdy as they are braced on the chassis (second picture):
