Ghosts 101 Adventures

Hi All,

So I took the 101 off camping this weekend... I caught up with the AULRO crew camping out at Amphitheatre.

We arrived Saturday afternoon and set-up camp (read: parked the 101) :wasntme:

We had a great time - it's a lovely property. Great people, great food and great stories! (Thanks Dave for the lift into town to get some extra supplies).

The fire was roaring, the grog was flowing, and the stories got better as the night wore on..! :angel:

We left Sunday at about 9:30 and headed back through Castlemaine - I rekon that I could spend a long weekend there, looking at the magnificent buildings, roaming around the various wineries, the book stores, the antique stores... I need to do some research but there sure seems to be plenty to do in the area...

Driving through SWMBO spotted a market (I swear its' a conspiracy) so we stoped.. I wondered off to take some photo's.

Hi All,

I've been very busy with work over the last 2 months - and the 101 has been off getting a few little issues fixed.

1. Engine Power - ever since halfway through the Birdsville trip, the 101 has just not had any power.. After much head scratching, the problem has now been found and fixed... There was a split diaphragm in one of the carbies, so it was effectively only running on one carby... FIXED

2. Prop Shaft Rumble - ever since getting the suspension reconditioned (new shocks, re-tempered springs) the prop-shaft rumble has been dreadful. At certain speeds it honestly felt like something was going to explode.. The 101 was sitting higher with the new suspension, which in my opinion stuffed up the prop-shaft angles... FIXED.

3. I've never had low-range OR a diff lick because of the way that the previous owner installed the automatic gearbox... FIXED

So here is what has happened in the last 2 months:

* LT230 transfer case installed (including new shifter cable)
* Hi-Lo shifter installed
* Automatic shifter gaiter installed (not sure where the old shifter gaiter came from, but the indicators didn't line up with what gear you were in)
* New Starter Motor
* New Spark Plugs / Ignition Leads
* Balance Carbies
* New Front Prop Shaft (double ended, double cardan joints - Tom Wood)
* Adjust Hand Brake set-up

Can't wait to see what that prop shaft has done to how it sounds now. :)

Rule 101 for all early carby rover V8 owners is to carry spare carby diaphrams................They are cheap and take up no room and easy to fit on the side of the road.
All 101 owners with mostly standard vehicles should also carry a spare throttle cable,oil cooler line and a spare fuel pump of some sort.

So, while I've been very busy at work (sometimes you have to wonder if taking holidays is worth the stress leading into the holidays), and I've been busy with the Shed Build... The 101 has been away having a heart transplant.

The 3.5 that came with the 101 let go a few months after I purchased it (I still have it in the garage, but it needs a rebuild).

A 3.9 was purchased 2nd hand (thanks Sitec) - condition unknown. The 3.9 was then installed and has worked reasonably well over the last 15,000km.... The 3.9 originally was very hard to start, so I had both of the carby's completely rebuilt.. That made starting the 101 much better and it drove well for a while, but I've since had the 2 diaphrams replaced.. I also know that one cylinder is down 50% on compression, with a suspected burnt valve.

Anyway - I have been thinking about engine transplants ever since the 3.5 let go... 200tdi/300tdi/td5/duramax/isuzu 4bd1t, etc.. All of these require quite a lot of work (especially engineering work) - and let's face it, who doesn't love the sound of the Land Rover V8...?

The engine transplant is more about - easier starting, more POWEEEER! and perhaps a slightly higher top speed, and perhaps slightly better fuel consumption.

I am going to keep the 3.9 (remembering that I also have a 2-Door Classic Range Rover and a Stage One v8 in the stable).. Here is the 3.9 - removed:

Land Rover 4.6v8 EFI (very recently rebuilt), ZF automatic gearbox (very recently rebuilt) and a new alternator as well..

It's a tight fit... In fact so tight, that the viscous fan has had to be replaced with an electric thermo fan...

The eagle eye amongst you will notice that the air cleaner pipe heads off towards the drivers side... Apparently the MAF sensor wouldn't fit on the passenger side, so the air cleaner pipe has been re-routed behind the engine and then back to the original position.

I haven't seen the 101 yet - the plan is to pick it up next Saturday, so expect some more pics then.

I do know that a surge tank has been installed - to feed the EFI system.

While the engine was out, I asked about ceramic coating... I know that the 101 is never going to be perfect, but I think that every little bit helps.. Anyway - the decision was made to coat the original manifolds plus the first 400mm of the exhaust... Only time will tell.

Hopefully next weekend I pick-up the 101, and I will be beaming like a new kid with a new toy...

It means that in the last 2 years I've upgraded the 101 quite a bit:

* New Radiator
* New Front Prop Shaft
* New Rear Prop Shaft
* New (rebuilt) engine
* New (rebuilt) gearbox
* Headlights converted to HID
* New starter motor
* New Alternator
* New Shocks
* Springs re-tempered
* CB / Sat Nav
* Sound proofing / heat shield the engine cover
* Defender Seats
* Red-Arc, Solar Panels, 2 x Batteries, Inverter
* Second Spare Tyre
* Jerry Can Holders (5 in total)
* New Door Tops

The only things left to do? (Is any Land Rover ever truly finished?)

* Power Steering
* 4 wheel disc brake set-up

I'll keep everybody updated once I pick-up the car and have taken it for a drive...

What more can I say than, Wow... I picked up the 101 today and it's been transformed... (I passed 2 trucks on the way home)... It sits on 100kmh quite easily now.. While it certainly isn't a Ferrari - it now does have acceleration..

The gas bottle holder broke while on the last trip - I had it re-welded and 2 extra support brackets added:

Initial impressions - after a 50km drive.

* Sits on 100 kmh easily. I didn't push it any harder than this - no need to.
* Can even overtake other vehicles.
* Quieter - they also replaced the seal on the engine cover
* Cooler - the ceramic coating has helped
* Instead of my foot being buried on the firewall - your foot rests on the accelerator now.
* Starts first time - no more choke, no more carby, no more hot/cold start
* I was stopped at a traffic light, idling at about 800rpm - when I thought it had stalled... Because I couldn't hear it!
* Theremo fan kicked in once when in stationary trafficc - 50% quieter than the viscous fan.

For all the 101 owners out there, who don't care too much about originality... GO FOR IT!!!
