Ah... Thought you were running an LT230.. Not sure then..prob best doing what you did for sure. Front axle would handle it fine, as would the prop. Prob not best driving hard, but a gentle run home and the front axle would have been fine. Is yours limited slip in the middle then?

This 101 was modified by the PO so no centre diff lock, only the vicious coupling that can do a similar thing. The viscous in the BW transfer case would have provided some drive to the front if the rear prop shaft had been removed, the front prop shaft is a HD double cardan unit and the front diff can easily take everything, so no dramas there, but the viscous coupling would have fried driving that sort of distance. The flat bed was the best option - you just need Total Care to get you back FOC. If they determine that a repair cannot be made within 72 hours of the breakdown, they will ship it FOC anywhere you want.![]()

So I crawled underneath the 101 yesterday and had a quick look.. Me thinks that I will need a new prop-shaft... And the exhaust pipe has taken a beating and has a hole it in now...
I guess I have to decide - do I go a fancy HD double carbon unit like the front one is, or do I just replace it with a standard one?
I seemed to remember that the front prop shafts in a 101 are the trouble more than the rear... But if I have to replace it - should I bite the bullet and go the HD double carbon while I am at it?
Gav - can you remember if my rear prop shaft is the standard length? I'm guessing that it might not be because of the auto box?
I'll look at removing the prop-shaft today and posting up some pics...

Hi All,
Well - looking at the prop-shaft - it was always going to die... And I think that I've answered my own question - I think that I will have to go for a HD double cardan...
The below pictures are of the REAR of the rear prop-shaft...
This is the end that was intact.. If you look closely you can see that the prop-shaft is eating itself... I'm not sure how to explain it but the metal part that holds the UJ - is rubbing into the main part of the prop-shaft... BOTH sides have the same issue...
The questions from here are - is there anybody in OZ that can create a HD double cardan prop-shaft or should I use the same company (UK based) that did the front one...
While I was under there I had a look at the front prop-shaft.. It appears to have lost one grease nipple, and the screw on seal at one end is also looking rather sick...

First thing I see... That's not a 101 prop.. That's a standard uni.. 101's run wide angle joints. Secondly.. Those marks will have been formed when the other end let go... Prob a good job (at the point when the other end let go) that you didn't have a wide angle prop... Otherwise the minimal flailing that took place would have been a lot more of an arc.. Prob resulting in chassis and floor damage!
Right.. Not sure what I have, but I do know that I have one standard 101 prop in my container... Not sure where tho.. Get a rough length (flange to flange) and I'll A, see if I can locate it, and B, see what length it is!![]()

Hi Sitec,
I'll measure up the prop-shaft tonight and post some pictures / measurements... Unfortunately the flange that is attached to the back of the gearbox/hand brake is still attached... I managed to remove 3 of the 4 nuts, but I think that the last one is damaged. Lying on my back and feeling it, I think that it has had a chunk of the nut removed and hence I can't get a spanner on it... (I'm not sure what I am going to do at this point).
I will get back to you tonight.
Cheers,
GG.

No prob. Re the stuck nut, as the rest of the prop is missing, you might get away with hammering a 14mm ( or whatever is close that you have to hammer on).. socket on the damaged nut, and remove it that way.. Once off, you can punch the nut out of the socket.
Not ideal use of tools I know, but certainly a 'Get out of jail card'!

Hi Simon,
In this picture - I measured from the outer edge of the UJ to the outer edge of the UJ - with the prop-shaft compressed... Distance = 555mm
![]()
In this picture - I measured from the outer edge of the yoke? - to the edge of the UJ... Distance = 25mm
In the last picture - I measured from the outer edge of the UJ to the outer edge of the UJ - with the prop-shaft extended... Distance = 600mm
So in theory - if you add the yoke to each ends, you would add a total of 50mm (approximately 25mm per yoke) to the length of photo 1 and photo 3..
Hopefully that makes sense?
It will be great if this is a standard length, even better if you have a 101 wide angle one, and even better if I can purchase it from your good-self...
Please PM me ASAP - hopefully you can find it and my measurements make sense !?![]()

Hi Tom.
Saw you're PM. I've dug the 101 prop I have out.. Its a front prop.. Extended length of 805 mm flange to flange, and 755 closed flange to flange.. So, too long.. Me thinks your best bet is to find a Range Rover Classic rear prop and have it cut down to suit.. Sorry mine is not right. Sounds like both yours are bespoke items..![]()
