    Camping and a breakdown

    Hi All,

So I took the 101 camping this weekend with LROCV... Headed North up the Hume to Whitfield... It started raining 5 minutes after we left home:

Arrived at camp - next to a nice river:

    Went for a quick walk:

Next day - hoped in a D3 and went for a drive to Mount Buggery:

There was a mix of cars (D1, Defender, mainly D2s, some D3s and D4s):

On the way home the 101 developed a vibration... At 80kmh - the vibration wasn't too good..
Faster or slower - and the vibration would stop.. I took my hands off the steering wheel - the 101 was tracking perfectly...
So I thought "I'll have a better look when I get home, I am only 50kms away" and I need to stop for petrol soon..

Bang... Pull over very quickly and..

The front UJ in the rear propshaft is no more... It looks like the propshaft bounced around a bit - with scratch marks on the chassis and fuel tank...

    Oh dear...

I will have a better look once the rain stops... I only ordered 2 "spare" UJs a few weeks ago.. Looks like I will need them now!!

I am just hoping that the actual prop shaft isn't damaged - as it most likely dug into the road surface and bounced around a bit...

On the way home - our tow truck was passed by another tow truck (with a D3 on the back), another tow truck (with an 80 Series Land Cruiser on the back) and another tow truck (with a Porsche Boxter on the back).

So I don't feel too bad...

I need to upgrade my RACV cover... The first 30km where free - and every km after that was $3.90 per km (probably about the same amount that I spend on petrol anyway!!!)...

Hi fella. Some good pics there. Re the UJ, they need more grease than less as they work overtime on 101's.. Carry a pair of 9/16 spanners. One stepped ring and one open ended. Drop the offending prop off, lock the center diff and drive home on the front. Loving the props on the new Fourby... 110mm tube and joints that are huge!!!

If I intend to do a long trip I grease the UJs.
I carry two new spares and new bolts and 9/16 spanners.
The tailshaft angles are high and they are really spinning hard with 5.58 to 1 diffs on the highway.
Could have driven home by dropping off the busted tailshaft , locking the centre diff and everything would have been good to drive home again.
When you are ever under the vehicle always check the tailshaft and drive flanges.
It also pays to keep a eye out for new oil leaks too.
These vehicles are well over 40 years old now and were not designed to run at highway speeds, but at a military convoy speed of 40 mph.
We are lucky with the 101s we can get them to go faster without to much trouble, but it pays to keep a eye on things.

Well thats a bit of a bugger,
great looking 101 and enjoy this thread!

Hang in there and hopefully its done no more than glancing off roadway until you stopped.

Only a Landy lover looks for action shots of their vehicle even when it being winched onto a flatbed

Years ago (when I had a 101), I ripped off the rear prop at an off-road site in the Uk. Unbolted the rear prop, locked the centre diff, and drove the 200kms home at around 120kph. No issues. New custom hd rear prop cost about 1/4 of a genuine part.
Land Rovers should never go home on tow trucks 😢

Hope you get yours fixed soon.

    I didn't think this 101 had a CDL.

You are correct Mick - it is running a Borg Warner transfer case behind a 4HP22 transmission.

So Land Rover gurus - because I don't have a CDL, would it have been safe to remove the rear prop shaft completely (to stop it flopping around and doing damage) and driven the 101 home like that?

I wasn't sure if by driving such a heavy vehicle in front-wheel-drive only, I would put the front axle under more stress than it could handle...

So I took the conservative approach and put it on a flat bed!

Would it have been safe to drive it without the rear prop shaft? I had approximately 50kms to get home...

    Cheers,

They had a viscous centre diff, didn't they?

Would have been worth a shot if you were in a desperate situation. I'd have phoned the RACV for a flatbed. Much easier. Less stress.

Oh, that is what you did.

On long expeditions, have someone in your party pack spares.
