101 - Oil Pumps
Hi All,
My 101 runs a 3.9 in it, because the original 3.5 died over a year ago.
On a recent outback trip I damaged the oil pump - when hitting a pot hole, the top of the diff hit the oil filter, and I believe that this has resulted in damage to the pump.
(I think that my suspension is old and tired, as the springs sit "flat" - there is no bend in them)
On closer inspection (and investigation) I believe that the oil pump for a 101 3.5v8 is different to the oil pump fitted to a standard 3.5 or 3.9
In the 101 - the oil pump points the oil filter upwards (towards the chassis).
On a 3.5 / 3.9 from a Classic Range Rover - the oil pump points the oil filter downwards - and hence my issue...
I am looking at replacing the original springs/shocks in my 101 - which should help, although I won't be able to tell until the new springs are in.
I have tried using the shorter oil filter - but it doesn't help, the front diff still has the potential to hit the filter due to the angles involved..
But that still leaves me with a problem - what do I do about the oil pump?
* Ideally I would purchase a new, original 101 oil pump - although I am guessing that this will be impossible.
* I have the original 3.5 pump, but it's loosing pressure once the engine is at operating temperature. On start-up I get about 30psi pressure, but once up to temp - it drops down to zero...
* Purchase a new oil pump for a 3.9 and fit that - hoping that replacing the suspension will result in stiffer suspension.
* Fit a remote oil filter - which I am not keen to do because (a) the engine bay is busy enough already, and (b) it's a bigger job that I want to tackle.
* After fitting new springs, try and increase the size of the bump stops - potentially helping avoid damage?
Q: Are there any other oil pumps that I could use?
Q: Does anybody have a 101 3.5 oil pump for sale?
Q: Is it possible to buy a new 3.5 oil pump for a Classic, strip the guts out of it - and put them into the casing from the old 101 oil pump? Effectively keeping the casing but replacing the gears?
Has anybody else had a 101, and needed to replace the oil pump - what did you do?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
GG.
