Looks like an old school heavy duty solenoid. Maybe follow the wires to see if you can work out what its switching?
Does anyone know what this item is in the center of the pic - it is under the drivers side cover next to the engine cover which is removed. The pic is taken from the rear of the drivers side of the engine looking forward.
I cannot find it in the parts manual so may be after market but does sort of look original.

That's not in my 12 volts GS so if it's original could be something to do with the 24 volt system?

Thanks - subsequent to posting I have confirmed it is an aftermarket starter relay - I found the original still in place on the front mudguard near the fuel filler and next to the fuel pump voltage dropper - both disconnected.
