The Sandgripes were Ok on the road but do wear pretty quick. They are the same tyre as the MRF bar treads but with a different tread.

I had one tyre that wore really quickly and despite rotation etc. On reflection the wheel that this tyre was on had a bit of a buckle so I suspect that it was creating extra wear as the wheel wobbled when being driven.

As mentioned the Sandgripes have large blocks with smaller blocks on top - so when new go well on the sand and the mud but with contact area being quite small on the bitumen the top blocks wear quickly. When down to the main block the tyres are still good in the sand but no longer any good in the mud as the blocks are close togther.

However when I got my Sandgripes they were only $220 so even with short life they are good value. On the standard rims I would have them again but it is hard to find people who sell them - the main importer was Ag Tyres in Moree but they got bought out my Maxxis so no longer have MRF.

looking for 650-16 tyres for my 1/2 Ton Lightweight , came across this US site, these 900-16 might go well on a 101 .

two problems the tyres do not have a DOT rating and previously there was a problem getting STA tyres into Aus privately. Some sort of arrangement with Antique tyres P/L being the sole Aus agent.

I like them too and managed to get 7 before they stopped selling to AUS.

Antique tyres won't sell them, probably because of the lack of the DOT rating.

OK thanks, that probably means I'll have to get my 650-16 STA Super Traxion from Antique Tyres as well, and at a premium

On a recent trip away I met Ben (lovely chap) from APT Road and he mentioned that the Michelin XZL Tyres (9.00 x r16) are still available in Australia... (I thought that they were as rare as hens teeth).

He mentioned that they are an optional extra on the Iveco Daily truck... And staying in the Ceduna caravan park, was an Iveco Daily....

Ben also mentioned that up in Brisbane, he had been quoted $660 for one of these tyres - so they are out there.. :)

Bit of a thread resurrection here - what's everyone's latest thoughts on tyres for a 101? Would be looking at something not quite as lumpy as the XZL's as these are quite noisy - yes I can hear them above all the other noise the vehicle makes - and they aren't required for what I do with the vehicle, and have always found they don't air down well anyway as they have such a strong sidewall. While an AT would be ideal, something like a truck tyre would also be suitable IMO but whatever I choose would need to be up to doing extended dirt road driving for touring without worrying about failure issues.

When I first put my 101 on the road I got MRF Sandgrip conventional fabrics - I got the sand grip tread pattern but you could also get bar treads.

They were a good tyre for the 101 but they did wear pretty quick - however they were very cheap at $200 so cost per mile is very good. Unfortunately the importer folded a few years back so they are now not available.

At that time XZLs were about $750 and the same issues you reported were being reported at the time - long wearing but a bit too heavy duty for a 101.

As the MRFs were not available I changed rims to 8" wide and went to BFG KO Mud Terrains - a proper steel belt radial, a good tyre and tread is more AT than MT. They are relatively quiet and wear well. I went with specialist rims but at about the same time Ron 101 got wider 101 style rims and went hard core MTs.

So if you stay with standard rims I think you are really looking at staying with your XZLs or importing 9.00x 16 type tyres from overseas. If you get the 101 widened rims (Eastern Wheel Works in Melbourne) or from UK 101 parts suppliers then you can go reasonably common MT/AT radials from companies like BFG/MAXXIS etc - but you will need that new power steering system you have got in the car park.

Thanks Garry, I'm trying to avoid going away from the standard rims if I can help it but I might have to if push comes to shove. I really don't want to use the XZL's again.

Would a 285/85r16 fit a standard rim? They are about an inch wider than a 255/100r16 from the tyre size calculator I looked at. If so, anyone know of anyone that makes these - they look a bit rare too...
