I just took the cap off the rear drive flange on my TDI 300 defender 130 axle.
The axle is a 24 spline job and I tried it against the 22 spline spider gear left over from the rear diff on the 101 landy.
It was like chalk and cheese.
The drive axle in the 101 huge compared to the one in the defender.
It is easy to see why a 101 doesnt break axles.
This is good news as it means there is plenty of meat to machine out of a ARB diff lock side gears ...........so much so I wonder if there is any other changes in the diff centre between the two vehicles.
I will go ahead and purchase a ARB locker for my defender with the idea to fit it to my 101.
This will take me about four months to scrape up the cash.
Operation front diff lock is go !

Today on the way up to the family farm another tree had fallen over the road again.
Being calm weather lately is was unexpected so I didnt bring the chain saw.
Just the axle on the dash board of the 101 and the winch.
Every time I use the Nokken winch the more I like it .
At first I though it was rubbish........but now it is just great.
I had two people with me who are useless when helping winching so as usual I was doing it solo.
This is where the Nokken shines for a PTO winch as you put it into gear and winch out ,hop out of the cabin and it doesnt feed out untill you pull on the cable.
IT is the reverse with winch in......great for single hand operation.
The only problem is I was running the winch out the rear you cannot see whats going on when in the cab.
The self laying of this winch is superb and it it has to be as it is under the vehicle.
I love the winch except for the fact it has no brake.......so soon as the clutch is depressed the load on the cable will pull it out .
This can be dangerous or a safely feature when winching logs as the winch was designed to do

    Alright,
I had better jump in before you two get bored talking to each other.

I have a GS in the middle of a rebuild.
Well the chassis is on milk crate at the moment but it was running before i stripped it to get rid of some rust in the crossmembers

Thats great - I think - are you doing a full on rebuild or just an build to get it back on the road.

I know about the rust bit - in the process of removing it from my rear X member - the centre and rear spring hangers are OK but the outer box sections are rusted at the bottom. Because of the thickness of metal is easy to cut out and weld in new bits.

The rear box section is poorll designed - let dirt and crap in and not out - I will be putting extra holes on the bottom so the crud can wash out more easily.

Have you got some pics - always love them and any mods you are intending to do.

Keep in touch and I hope all is going well.

    Cheers
