new 101 owner

G day all. went for my first drive in the 101 and it was awesome:D. to be honest i thought it was going to be like driving an old dodge but its much the same as a series landy. the brakes are good, steering isnt to heavy and the ride wasnt to bad either but off road should be another story.it has about the same amount of room for your legs as a defender which is none and your leg rubs on the door and the hanbrake much like the defender. gotta love the sound of the v8. wiyh the original gears still in it the engine sounds sweet around 60 but it will go alot faster just not comfortable so fitting the new gears is the first job. took some picks of some of the winch components that will get fitted down the track. thanks to stuart aka "tommy k" for some info on the type of paint that is on it and why it comes off so easy and also for the meaning of the writing on the doors. cheers gaz

You must be long legged and me a short ar#e as I find the leg room OK
My first impressions was the familar gearbox and engine of a classic range rover or stage one series V8.....but the forward control/gear stick position was different.
The standard gearing will give a 80kpm cruise at about 3500 rpm.
Every one one who thinks the springs are reasonable hasnt driven a 101 over a dirt road.
Where the standard springs shine is at high speed over corrigations as the two spring leafs give little friction and act like coils.
I find the brakes on mine poor( it could just be my vehicle )
To test the steering ......try the local car park.
I find at higher speeds my reactions tend to be slightly too late and not enough due to the gearing of it and the short wheel base...especially when towing.
Yep the great thing about the 101 is sitting near that bent 8 as it sounds great from the drivers seat and out side.
I find my 101 is driven as a three speed with second gear starts.
First is for towing starts or most off road work.
Low range I find is only needed if I am fair dinkum off road.
The overdrive is the best way to fix the cruise speed........my was cruising at 100kph today with no stress and I only use it in top gear on flat roads and normal direct drive as a around town gears.
Gaz you should find a brrrrrrruuummm noise from the front end when you push the old girl up beyond the 80kph zone on the float going down hill and if you are not use to it you think there is something very wrong.
This is totally normal and the best thing to do is either back off on the power a bit or put it on and the vehicle will drive out of it again .
Very important to keep the tailshalts in very good nick.
A good trick is burn off a 6 cyl pootrol or cruiser at the lights and watch the looks on there faces.
On the photo of the winch parts on the washing machine.... the cable pulley nearest to the washing machine knob, do you have another similar item as two are needed to bring the cable inside the chassis a bit to clear the front wheel when it is on lock.
So whats the story with the markings and why does the paint flake off ( I might learn some thing )
I am finding the paint on mine 101 flaking off on the wheels and front wheel step.
I looked at the winch on mine , is it the two plates either side of the chassis which the winch appears attached two you want the detail information.

Maybe ive had a diesel too long but but i dont think i could sit on 80 and listen to those revs. tailshaft slipshaft has play in it so will have to sort out another down the track. the brakes are pretty good on this one, only travels halfway to the foor but have a fair bit of bite in them. both pulleys are there the second one is in the photo just behind the fairlead roller. yea the info im after is the sizes of the plates on the chassis and the ones under the chassis that the bolts go into etc. got some rust to sort out in the rear crossmember but only 2 small plates. cheers gaz:)

Beware - I have been working on my rear X member - the thing that concerned me was that all the high tensile bolts in the rear X member were corroded through but you could not see it. The bolts are about 10mm and in the middle were coroded down to about 3mm thick.

So I would be looking at replacing the bolts that hold on the lifting/tow points, the rear bumpers and very importantly the tow bar bolts.

The winch pics of my 101 in as much detail as I could do .
The thick black tar under coat makes it hard to pick out detail.
That same undercoat has saved my rear X member from any harm.

G day all

After alot of late nights the 101 is now roadworthy and registered. replaced all the exhaust bolts and mountings. wire buffed the front and rear diffs then painted. some minor wiring, adjusted the brakes etc. went over the pits first go. changing the transfer ratios is the next job.sorry no pics as after getting covered in rust dust and grease etc for the last week i wasnt in the mood.
