Viscous fan bearing?
Need help people's, Got a call last night from the better half, who was driving the 300TDI back from the city.
The car was making a rather nasty and loud rattle from the engine bay area.
went through a basic check ( car running fine on temp etc) any way got home and it had gone a short time later
Had a good look over this morning before heading down the street, nothing seems wrong , started fine runs fine can't fault the performance.
leaving safeway, its back ! sounds like there is a big bit of metal hitting something, like a marble in a dryer, not rev related or clutch just there, drove 100 meters expecting it all to end badly and its gone again? like it was never there?
where do i start to look?
Viscous fan bearing?
Maybe something rattling around in the bellhousing, like a piece of clutch, spring or lining, loose bolt, hope not.
Try taking the fan belt off and see if the noise stops, check damper pully, rocker cover off check rockers and valve springs, all things you can do without involving a mechanic, Regards Frank.
thanks for pointers i will look over again today, damm thing has not done it again ....... so a lot of try and see.
Guy's,
Any updates on what this problem is? Mine started doing it yesterday and Im 1300kms fom home in central Queensland.
just an update.
a mechanic said he believed one piston wasnt moving. my disco is going on a truck ride back to brisbane. I will post again when the engine is pulled down hopefully with some photos of the problem. I had 291,000 kms on the clock.
nothing from this end yet, had a good crawl over the truck yesterday, and still nothing, let it run for 30 min , no sound not even a hint of one.
The only suspect thing i've found it the flex elbo on the exhaust seems a little close to the engine block and may be hitting at time.
Rocker cover of today is the plan.
i had a loud noise suddenly happen to me in the engine bay and it ended up being the power steering pump had sheered a bolt so although it was intact and in place it made a nasty metallic knocking noise especially on engine idle where it was banging backwards and forwards in place, however it did dump all the fluid as well as the brass elbow had worn through due to it rubbing on other components in the engine bay.
So may not be your problem but I would be inclined to make sure all you ancillaries are OK by getting the belt off and giving everything a good pull and shake and also giving your belt a check over make sure its in good order as loosing a rib can be an indication of it not running true
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
Well a sad update, checked all the above even dropped the oil to check internals, nothing. have travelled around 400km with no noise reappearing until yesterday morning with a quick trip down the street. noise came back with the nett effect that the disco no longer starts and in now awaiting a tow truck for collection it appears its terminal with the cloud of black smoke / noise and non starting.
the brand is really pushing me at the moment, 1 disco written off prior to Xmas , 1 dead on the side of the rd in the new year
