    Kosciuszko Camping

Looking for recommendations for camping in the Kossie Nat Park.
We (me, bride and 12 and 10 year old kids) have never camped in the park before. I know its going to be busy, so any pointers to less populated spots would be helpful. Any known yobbo haunts to avoid? This trip will be used as a recce for further trips such as Geehi.

    Thanks Craig

I'd look at somewhere like Tom Groggan, or across the River at Dogmans Hut in the Alpine NP Vic.

Or Charlies Creek on the Davies High Plain Track, even Davies High Plain Hut, there won't be many if not knowone at these places.

When are you planning on heading off.

    Baz.

I'd stay at Geehi - great area and if you're 'lucky' you'll get one of the two cabins.

    Other areas:
    Tom Groggin
Three Mile Dam - near Mt Selwyn
    Lobbs Hole - no amenities
Talbingo (Jounama Creek) - opposite the turn-off down by the river
    Paddy's River Dam
Long Plain Hut or Blue Waterholes
O'Briens Hut - up near Cabramurra
    O'Hares - on Elliott Way

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Cheers
    Chris

Edit - that's all the NSW side. There is a heap more not far from the border on the Vic side.

If you want to mix up camping with something different you might like to check with the lodges at Charlotte Pass (try Stillwell). Some are open across summer and would make a cheap and comfortable base for hiking. Or you could spend a couple of nights at the Chalet - less cheap but even more comfortable. Nice to do a day walk up Kosciusko then come back to some minor luxuries like a hot shower and decent coffee.

In January make sure you take a dozen Aerogard, citronella candles and a mosquito/fly tent. The flies are there in zillions or even quadzillions.

I camped at Tom Groggin once in January and the only respite was to dive in the Murray, which is no hardship.
Oh and you will probably have about 50 roos with soulful begging eyes sitting a metre from you while you eat .

You can cross the Swampy Plains R at the northern end of the Geehi campgound and you can (legally) drive downstream for ks & ks so it should be possible to find a less populated campsite (but boil your dinking water).

*** watch out for snakes, saw quite a few a couple of weeks ago when I was fishing the Swampy Plains at Geehi, the Indi (aka Murray) at Groggin and up the Buckwong.......

now it's holiday season the trampling hordes may frighten them off some.....

Not really that much of a worry if you wear long duds & boots (or waders) but keep an eye on the kiddies and equip yourself with a snakebite kit (long elastic bandage) and learn how to use it (10 & 12 y olds should be sensible enough).

what they said about the flies is right, but if you venture over to the Tumbarumba/Buddong area it might not be quite as bad.......and there really is a plague of tame roos.....

    Baz,

We plan on being there from Monday 29th through Friday 2nd Jan.
Plan on doing a fair bit of driving checking out the place. Take the kids up to Mt Kos (via the chair) and whatever else we can find to do.

still about a 7km walk each way from the top of the chairlift, that is, if the highest one is working, otherwise more ks...

there are more legally accessible side tracks available for touring than you can hope to cover in that time....

you can download a map from the parks website

& you can cross into victoria upstream at groggin

Most places will be fairly busy as most are 2WD accessable, although a lot go home for new year so you might be lucky, take some Bushmans repellent for the March flys, they were murder last year

There are a few places to choose from, some of the above will be very crowded, but some will be quiet if you don't mind a bit of a drive in and out of camp, maybe some of the guys above have a secret spot and might share it with you

Have a great trip, it's a lovely area.
