Thanks folks I measured some of my gear and I think a 2.15 or 2.2 tray will do me nicely and not be too long

After viewing rijidij's inspired work, the HarMeister and myself set aside today's scheduled Sunday Matilda resto session to do the double axle conversion.

With all the differing lengths,
I am ashuming that 1.8 wide it the max?
I think max vehicle width without a special permit is 2.5 metres
Max width is determined by body exremities. The tray (including any fittings) can't protrude more than 15 cms from the body extremity and in any case no more than 2.5m in total width.
Permits are for temporary loadings. No vehicle can be constructed to exceed 2.5m.
Regarding dropside tray size,eg-length of tray.
The general rule of thumb is No more than 60% of wheelbase over hang from centre line of rear axle to rear of tray.
For example-wheelbase of 130 is 3225mm
3225mm x 60%= 1935mm.This would be the MAX dimension from rear axle centre line to rear of tray.'[overhang] You would find it difficult to tow anything and wouldn't do much for chassis reliability, you would be spot lighting koalas with headlights.
110 single cab, with a 2260mm long tray has 1330mm over hang from rear axle c/line to rear of tray, and 930mm forward to behind cab. This 110 is an example that I have seen, and measured.:)
while you are on a roll rijidij.. how about a few more extended tray pics
1. with two (rather than one) lazy axles on the rear)
2. Half track version !
