    Ok last question,
I'm still not sure which kit to go for.
the engine temp gauge that is in the dash, what exactly does that measure? engine oil?block temp?
so does the lead from the original temp then plug into the EMS2 and what is the menu option measuring.
is it necessary to buy the extended harness? or is it originally with a loom to sensors which is too short?
    thanks for your help

I would expect that the current temp gauge has a sender somewhere in contact with the coolant.

As for the extended harness or not I think that the people on the Madman site should be able to answer that question for you.

Madman does sell a long harness, I suggest you take it - easier to route things in the engine bay.

I have just bought the EMS2,
however not exactly sure where to put coolant temp VDO on my defender TD5. if you have installed on a TD5 could you post photos of where u put it? i know there is an inline sender that i could buy to put onto a radiator hose, however i thought it wasn't suitable for defenders as they have the plastic header tank and again unsure where the best place to put if it is suitable.

also is the oil temp vdo the same as transfer temp vdo? just placed differently?

from what i understand the existing coolant thermostat cant be wired into the EMS2 so have to put another one in.

    thanks

Def9087, on a Td5 the coolant temp sender should be installed in a special adaptor plate which bolts in between the engine and the top hose - I'll try and post a picture of mine (not installed yet). You should have been supplied one of these if you bought it as a kit.

I got my kit from NATA enterprises (the entertainer on this forum) he may be able to supply the adaptor if you don't have one. I haven't fitted mine yet (waiting until I have to change the coolant) but I think you will probably need longer bolts to go to the head because the original bolts will not be long enough to accommodate the adaptor and the top hose connector.

And yes transfer temp sender is the same as oil temp sender (is the same as coolant temp sender) - they're the same VDO temp sender just installed in different locations. I think on the EMS2 you can only monitor 2 temps though.

Drover, from experience I'd recommend dealing with NATA enterprises. The service was excellent and very prompt (I think it turned up within a week). He answered all my questions in person by phone before I bought the kit, he knew what he was talking about and supplied me with everything I needed (apart from the longer bolts). For dollars just google NATA enterprises and check out his web site. As has been said before they are not cheap but I think the price is reasonable. It's a neat solution to placing lots of gauges (somewhere?) in a Defender.

    Hi,
I bought it through Nata Enterprise in NSW . i Ummed and aared for ages but thought in the end if i had any dramas shipping back to SA might be difficult.
Jan was very helpful and sent it out super quick. just got to work out where exactly to put the coolant temp vdo . i think it may have been similar price to ordering from SA as the unit is slightly more exe, but shipping is less. i think head unit was $270, and i ordered individual probes as i'm not fussed by oil pressure.

    Hi Ian,
so is that the inline type connector for the coolant temp? placed in between 2 bits of hose?
where abouts in the engine bay /cooling system did u put it?
i would really appreciate a photo to explain.
i had heard that if u put it close to the expansion tank its not as accurate in temp as closer to the block, but unsure of where that may be?
and did u just drill and tap into the transfer case or is there a blanking plate/bolt u can replace it with?

    thanks
