Defence requirement is that the supplier is to be able to guarantee 10 years of spare parts. As LR is in the process of changing the 110 variants to meet US and European passenger and pedestrain safety requirments, LR could not guarantee 10 years worth of spare.
It has nothing to do with the capabilities of the vehicles
5 year old thread dig but LR can supply parts. From the horse's mouth...
"With production of current Defender now in its final phase, Land Rover has committed to supply replacement parts for 15 years for this automotive icon. Thereafter, owners of the current Defender will be able to maintain their treasured car by ordering genuine Land Rover Heritage Parts through Land Rover's global network of retailers."

The G-Wagen has some extra special bolt on stuff that makes it lightly armored, as well as able it to carry 4 troops in full battle gear.
Auto transmission.
The rear of the G is quite small as they are fitted with a air compressor for re-inflating tyres.
As a result all G vehicles need to tow a trailer to carry the extra gear.
Land Engineering project has been going for over many years to find a Tri-Service replacement to the fleet.
I personally think a V6 CRTDI diesel is too complicated for a military vehicle, but technically they wont be used in full battle as there are other vehicles that fit the role.
