Having just sold my 300 5wks ago after owning for ten years I can say it was a fantastic vehical, easy to work on,went ok(ish) great on fuel, BUT updated to an 03 td5 and I really couldnt believe the difference, chalk n cheese, td5 goes better, rides better, and its got this cruise control thing !Like the guys say before me though , its all computers and electrics, Happy days!! it all depends on what you do.
The Td5 is a much nicer engine to live with and drive. The torque curve etc makes it drive like a car. The Tdi is more of a tractor engine with a flatter torque curve.
Both engines get expensive if major repairs are needed, but the Td5 gets silly expensive. (so get one that has been looked after and this becomes a moot point).
Unless you are hell bent on doing all your own maint with nothing but a screw driver and a socket set the Td5 is the better all round engine.
Timely thread, I find myself needing more seats and am considering what to do with my 110 300tdi c/chassis(160k on clock & am happy with it)- I need a 110 crew cab (prefer this than a 130) . Whether to change body ($5k) or spend another $10k & get a 130td5 that'll probably have 200k on it. Most of my maintenance is done at home, one reason I got the 300tdi when the 109 needed upgrading. People I've known with td5's have had a bad run with mechanics who didn't know how to fix them right (said owners being not mechanically or Land Rover minded) & have sold them & gone back to jap ****. Meanwhile my tdi hasn't missed a beat apart from a p-gasket

If you are happy with your Tdi then keep your Tdi.
300 TDI = slower cruising speeds or slows, relaxing ride, enjoyment of the scenery, less stress, no need to be wanting to overtake anyone, blah, blah, blah. I just enjoy cruising along now, cos I've got no choice :)
