Donaldson top spin pre-cleaner on Puma

Has anyone fitted a snorkel-top precleaner to the Puma? I have a Safari snorkel and was wondering wether it was worth fitting a pre-cleaner for Western Queensland run or would the Duratorq 2.4 turbo need more air than a pre-cleaner will supply? Donaldson top spin have a variety of sizes/capacities. Im not talking about 100km on the highway but 60-80km pulling a camper trailer in bulldust country? Getting the air filter element out past the air conditioning hardware is a real pain. If I read the manual correctly you actually have to purge and disconnect the airconditioning to get the the top off the airbox. All thoughts appreciated. Warren.

Are you talking about a Donaldson swirl bowl pre-cleaner? If so, get advice from Donaldson. These items were not generally recommended for other than stationary or slow moving plant, and not for automotive plant at road speeds.

The Donaldson scoop is for trucks.

I agree, my advice too. I believe the 'cyclone' type effect is lost above 30kmh or thereabouts. I would get more data before jumping in.

Getting the air filter out is fiddly but you don't have to do anything with the air conditioning plumbing as such. I release the outlet hose to the engine on the air box, unclip the two clips which keep the top of the box shut, push down on the A/C hose a little and manouver the top away from the air cleaner. You need to tilt the air box top up (engine side) and manouver it away from the rear clip/clamps which are a moulded "hook" type arrangement hidden under the wing. The top "hooks" under the catch points if that makes sense. Reverse the process to put it back.
Be careful with the air flow sensor wiring on the box. The connentor is not particularly strong as I found out the hard way!

Photo of air filter box top showing rear "hooks" of box.

Hope this makes it a little clearer.

I am pretty sure you are incorrect on this. They are likely only recommended for "off highway" applications as dust loads are higher.

If you look at the top-spin pdf brochure the 1st image on the 2nd page is a desert racing hummer.

They will work fine at speed.

    Pre cleaner

I run a pre cleaner bowl (not top spin) on my TD5 D2, it works well no loss of performance & colects heaps of dust, well worth the effort.

    Sy-Klone 9000 Precleaner

Thanks everyone for all that help - now Ive also found this jobbie - Sy-Klone 9000 which looks the deal - cant find a price anywhere but looks bloody expensive.

    Off Road 4 x 4 Drive Vehicles - Sy-Klone - Air Pre- Cleaner Technologies

Maybe I should just spend more time in the Defender and less time on the internet looking at toys (and other stuff).

I've got a Donaldson you can have for free if you pay the postage. I ran it for about 6 months on the Puma and went back to the safare oooollllllah intake. The wife and son said it made the SVX look like an old mans car so now the only dust it collects is on the shed shelf.

They appear to have been made with the Safari snorkle in mind. The Donaldson precleaners/swirl bowls flange do not match up to the Safari and you have to adapt it in some way.
