Even though a diesel idles at an extremely lean mixture, as best as I can understand it is that idling for too long drops chamber temps too much and can lead to fuel wash down the cylinder wall and the potential for bore glazing or just plain ring wear.
Modern, high spec oils can mitigate the glazing (mostly) but owners still don't like it.
I can confirm that the 200tdi my son had was not a high oil consumer and neither are our 300 tdis.......have you checked the usual (and unusual) places for oil leaks ?
my 200 tdi has done round 100,000 on a rebiuld it use's round 300 ml between 5000 k service's thats useing fuchs oil that i get for free from work, i used to have a 300tdi if used penrite oil it would burn a little between service's but wouldnt burn a drop with the fuchs ,
my brother hilux did similer things with different oil's as well
Mine uses no oil between changes, has 205,000 on the clock. the only leak is from the transfer box at about 500ml per 2-3000 klm
Head gasket done at 400K, injector pump overhauled at around 500K, big ends are being replaced before the engine is fitted to its new owners vehicle. (The original vehicle was recently accident damaged and written off:()
Interestingly, NO bottom end noises and excellent/ quick oil pressure, with B'ends untouched 'til now.

The line about taken on long runs and regular servicing is the key, mine clicked over 436K this morning and it has instant oil pressure and no bearing noise, the misses drove it to work last week and I did hear the pinion bearing whining in the R380 while standing next to it though. Pat
It always amazed me. Our 300tdi (Discovery) used to leak oil(fluids) everywhere. Driveway and under vehicle was always covered but never needed anything between services.
Pat,
With this vehicle, I was almost its 'personal physician', twice a year we had it in for servicing and the owner was very pro active too, checking levels and listening for changes in performance or any odd noise etc. I was so confident in the engine, that even at those hi km I bought the wreck off them and have sold the complete engine to a member on here, yet to be fitted to his vehicle. I would fit it to mine in a heartbeat, I see many, many lower km examples that through neglect or abuse are in far worse condition.
