The current Hi-mount is the Warn 8274-M50. The motor sits above the drum. They are much faster than the low mount winches.
Here's my 8274-m50

Low mount is the normal type winch that most have, say the Warn XP, where the winch motor, gearbox and drum are in line.
OK, so the term 'high mount' relates to where the motor is mounted on the winch. Not where the winch is mounted on the vehicle. Much appreciated Psimpson7.

:D
Karl, thier horses for courses.I've had both and prefere the high mount for it's speed.I also think the gear drive on the HM is better than the worm and wheel on LM but thats a personal thing. Pat
I don't want to shanghi this thread, so last question(s): in general terms are the HMs more bulky; and for the same motor size (ie hores power or watts or what ever), which has the better load or pulling power (as opposed to speed)?

:)
My current Warn HM was better than my Thomas LM and is quicker and seems to be less troubled hauling than my mates XP9000.I do have Arc Welder cables powering mine so that would be helping. Pat
Probably the biggest non-competition benefit of the high mount over low mounts is the brake is seperate to the drum, so you don't have as much risk of overheating the newer hi-tech ropes.
Thats a good point also.I'm changing to synthetic when I can afford it. Pat
Makes a huge difference to weight over steel cable and makes all the difference in the world when your lugging an armfull of it up a hill ;)
Pat I would be looking at the states and the amsteel blue rope while the dollar is good...you can also get it in diff colours, we bought our dark green rope couple of years ago the same way. cost about 300bux for something like 30mtrs (could of been slightly more cant remember) and that was for the thicker stuff...dont quote me think it was like 8/16 or something like that...that was also with big yellow hook and an abrasion guard
