Another dealer initiated Problem!!

G'day pc3.

I don't know how the dealer did it...I had to tell them that it could be done, as others on this forum have had theirs switched off when going bush, and back on again when home.

The dealers were pretty happy to switch mine off and leave it that way, as they, combined with LR tech advice, could not rectify it. I'm happy too, as I don't want to be bailed up in remote areas again! I think they replaced the immobilizer module 3 times to no avail. I suspect the experts with Nanocoms might be able to advise how it's done???

I want mine turned off and never switched on again !! Waste of time IMHO.......what normal perosn would want to steal a defer :D

Just accessed the Puma manual & it states that the inertia switch is incorporated in the internals of the anti theft module.

That obvioulsy means the problem is else where but they were unable to think outside the box...

I wonder if a bad earth can set it off..bad earths seem to be the bane of a lot of cars when they get problems

The anti-theft module is a Lucas10AS same as on the Disco 1's and Td5 Defenders. It controls the hazard and interior lights and can be enabled or disabled from passive immobilising, volumetric sensors and can also control central locking. As mentioned it also has an inertia switch but this is to control the cabin access and not the engine.

The inertia fuel shutoff (IFS) switch on a Tdi or Td5 is on the firewall, the Puma does have an IFS too but so far I haven't been able to find out where it is or whether it is built into something else.

Ahh finally,

This explains a few things that have happened recently. I have hit 2 Roos in the last 2 weeks, and after each incident the hazards have come on.... i couldnt work out why.

I had a similar problem with my 2008 Puma. It got to the stage where the flashers would activate at random on the bitumen...no bump required!

Indicator warning lights only activated when flashing occurred - no red triangle hazard light or trailer indicator light on dash as when the hazard switch is pressed.

You are on the right track with the Puma manual, the inertia switch is incorporated in the anti-theft module and as per "dmdigital" in the Puma it is a Lucas 10AS (A-larm & S-ecurity) unit. It is mounted on the firewall behind the fuses panel and can be seen by removing the radio speaker to right of fuses. The LR part no. is YWC500640.

As per "spudboy", it thinks you have had a crash and 'unlocks' the doors (you might hear the central lock unit activate noise when the flashers come on) and activates the hazard lights.

With engine running, it was found that by reaching in through the speaker hole and giving the 10AS module a firm tap in the upper R/H quadrant with the butt of a screwdriver that the flashers would activate.

I was told by the dealer that these modules cannot be serviced and it was replaced under warranty ex UK.

Think you have confirmed a few of my suspicions in regard to the locals in this country.

As a requirement of renewal of the insurance on his Defenders my neighbour has been forced by the insurance company to install security posts in his drive which raise and lower to allow access.

Seems this anti theft measure is due to the very high theft rate of Defenders in the UK.

3toes defenders are very low volume in Oz so the market for the parts and upgrades is tiny compared to the U.K. But they sell far more landcruisers and patrols so they get stolen and stripped or used in ram raids a great deal more.

When you interrogate the ECU with the computer thing in the dealer there is an option for Immobiliser and Alarm. Its as simple as going in there and turning everything off. My mechanic let me stand over his shoulder as he did it to see what was going on.
Also allowed me to obtain the emergency access code, so if I lose my plip key or anything else happens I can unimmobilise it with a few turns of the key.

If you want it done should take you no more than 20 minutes in a dealer. No doubt they wont be as nice as mine tho and they will actually charge you!
