did you ever look at a county back seat?Due to my kids out growing the back seat of the Defender, I have upgraded (or downgraded depending on your view) to a Discovery 2.
They're happy with the extra leg room & comfort so will have no excuse not to come away with us some more!
The Defender doesn't get picked up till Friday, & I'm already missing it.

Yes - the county rear seat (or more correctly 110 prior to 1989ish - late model countys had the newer seat) is quite a bit lower and further back. I am not sure how easy they would be to swap - I have never looked into it as I have a county, not a defender...Is there that much difference with the County seat? I also have the problem of the cargo barrier limiting how far back the seat could go.
The cargo barrier mounts would be easy to modify to move the barrier back.

There's a Land Rover to choose for every stage in life...the kids will get sick of hanging around eventually and then you can buy another Defender.
I should say that the Disco is very nice, it's just not a Defender.
