Hi Sarseg
Seems as though you have air in the fuel system thus the noise when initially turning the ignition on.
You said you replaced the injector seals (why) you may have an air leak at the seals or in the cylinder head, if after you have bled the fuel system you should have no strangling cat noises if you still have I would be looking for an air leak into not out of the fuel system.
Hope this helps if not give me a call

I would agree - it definitely sounds like there is air in the system... I replaced the injector seals due to an intermittent starting fault after other things were ruled out. Upon changing them, they looked shot and had a fair bit of black crud under them.
You raise very good points - but I am unsure where to go from here. I agree with the air leak, but I definitely cannot find it. I changed the injector seals again just to be sure. When I changed the seals I played with nothing else - just changed the seals, and from then on it will not start. However, now I have checked and changed f/filter and connections, checked flow from tank/pump at filter and FPR, and now I am stuck.
Cheers guys.
Something else for you to try.
Remove plug at fuel cooler and clean and replace, see if that works for you.
It cost me a injector loom and new fuel pump before I found this was my problem all along, and I was just about to do all my injector seals.;)
I still don't know why it would affect the fuel pump but it did.
I chased a similar problem in our daughters TD5 Defender, I tried everything and shied away from the fuel pump because of $$$$. Turned out to be the problem. Sometimes diesel gets an algae growth which blocks the filter at the base of the pump. This appears as a thick slime. The bottom cover plate (plastic) can be removed for cleaning.
This can also be terminal for the pump.
Worth a look - there are some posts in AULRO on removing the fuel pumps.
At the end of the day you say you replaced the injector washers because there was a problem - possibly something else all along.

Will get a new pump and give it a go then. Where is best to order from - I'm not going to pay the crazy Aussie prices!
Rimmerbros?
John Craddock UK?
LRDirect?
Someone else?
Anyone got experience with these?
I know it's one hell of a long shot, but can you unplug and clean the plug on the crank angle sensor? it's on the LHS towards the top of the flywheel housing, kinda down the back of the engine (LHS when sitting on the engine facing the rear).
I remember reading somewhere that it is the only sensor on the TD5 that if disconnected/faulty the engine will not run- all others the ECU will run with a default value.
Maybe it got knocked/disturbed with your work?
Do you know of anyone with a nanocom to see if you have any faults logged?
Best of luck, wish I could help more,
Fraser
Thanks fraser. I already gave that one a go as well. I was clutching at straws. Thanks for the info though.
