Thanks Spudfan for your input. I ended up doing what you suggested.
I found that the fault was on the earth side within the light unit itself. A faulty connection where the male spade connector connects with the copper film.
Rather than dismantle the light base, I found it easier just to run the extra bypass wire down to the main earth connector after drilling a small hole in the light unit for the wire. Hidden behind the window seal, it is quite a neat job & better still, the light now works. :)
Cheers,
Lionel
For any sticklers who want to repair the tracks in the glass, this product from permatex might be worth a look. I'm pretty sure I've seen it at a repco or autobarn somewhere in my travels. It allows you to repair the copper tracks, and would probably work closer to where the spade terminals met the lights.
But the two wire trick is equally elegant.
Can I add to your reply , some years ago I damaged a couple of strips on a heated rear screen on a panel van . A product like this repaired the strips and full heated screen again So I suppose before anyone goes out paying for new rear window check the copper strips ??..Jim
I'm going to replace my OEM fully functioning rear light with this LED replacement from the UK.
I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner as you could have had mine.
