The engine in that Amarok is the one out of the European Golf GTD (diesel Gti). It is has an insane amount of torque for a 2 liter engine (170PS or metric horsepower and deep in the 400Nm's torque on the European spec one). It's apparent all to do with the super high pressure fuel injection. Driving it nicely (and unloaded) it is rumoured give you 20km/liter or 5liters/100km at a steady 120km/h :eek:
Australia and America is really the last bastion of big engines and Europe is completely moving towards small high spec ingines that are essentially disposable and can be 95% recycled at the end of it's reasonably short expected lifespan.
Obviously this sort of thinking is no good out here, but unfortunately R&D is done with those parameters in mind.
