Funnily enough I find dealing with America for motorbike, 4wd and RC parts a much more pleasant and cheaper experience and more often than not they are more knowledgeable too. I used to work in a 4WD shop until it closed so I do feel for the local retailer, but they really need to lift their game in knowledge and service.

I know quite a few people that have bought from down south without any troubles.

On average how much for a call to the UK ?

The best way to call the UK is Skype (computer to UK landline). Put $10 on a Skype account and call the UK for under 5 cents per minute. The money won't expire and you'll be able to use it for future calls untill the money on the account runs out. Obviously you can call anywhere in the world, but UK and USA is by far the cheapest.

The other option is a phone card, but you still pay for the local call and the card charge...
