Retaining salvage rights seems to be an issue unless I pay a high premium so I guess I have to try Shannons and NRMA (RACV Classic Insurance).
I've been told that in the event of a write-off accident you can negotiate with the insurer and potentially buy the wreck, if the car is old enough you get this automatically with Shannons & RACV Classic and if you pay a high enough premium you have this with other insurers.
I'm baulking at paying more to insure a $12K vehicle (agreed value), only occasionally used than a $47K vehicle used everyday in a sales role.
Off-road insurance is a luxury I can live without because of the low usage.
It's possible to get agreed value with the std. RACV insurance (I think the market value for a '95 Defender is about $7K ) so that's another option. From memory the std. insurance also scores discounts if you are an RACV member and have other policies whereas the RACV Classic insurance doesn't get discounts.
Sounds like another hour or so on the phone.....

I just changed from AAMI to Shannons for my '95 Disco. All the regular company's would only insure it for a max of $5000, but Shannons gave me $10,000 agreed value and they were cheaper too! I would have thought your '95 Defender would be worth more than $12,000.
Spoke with Shannons today, $709 for 14K agreed value. RACV Classic (NRMA) $729 for 14K agreed value. Both are low Km, RACV Classic includes RACV cover (which I already have anyway) Shannons includes 1 windscreen per year
RACV (STD) insurance would only go to $11,500 agreed value maximum, didn't get a price but......my wife spoke to RACV a while ago and got quoted $629 for $13,600 agreed value (absolute maximum they would go to). Not sure why today I could only get $11,500 agreed value, anyway I have a quote number so I'll chase them tomorrow.
We already have 2 cars insured with RACV plus home contents plus RACV membership so scored a few discounts.
Current insurer is Elders (long story) and they said market value is $7.5K
Cannot get retention of salvage with any of them because it's not old enough. I'm told that in the event of a writeoff you can possibly buy back the wreck for the same price as they sell to a wrecker.
Every insurer I've spoken to cannot explain why a $14K vehicle for low Km usage costs about the same as a $47K vehicle used high Km everyday. Same driver, same suburb......what is it with bloody insurance companies !
