I have a 4JB1T with ZF auto that uses the M&D Engineering kit in my 90 which is for sale.

I loved driving this in the 90 with the auto. So nimble. It was such a pleasure to drive. :)

To do my 90 justice, it really deserved a chassis up rebuild. Given I no longer drive it as much as what I used to, chances of me finding time to do this rebuild is unlikely, hence its parting out. :(

Everythings there, from exhaust to auto cooler to power steering pump. Everything needed to bolt in.

She will go on ebay if no one takes any interest soon.

I have been chasing up leads for a 4BJ1T. Engine exchange does not seem to have any in stock and not planning on getting any more in. Says they are getting old. As far as I can work out the Holden Rodeo which they were also fitted was the second most popular 4x4, almost equalling sales of the hi-lux, so there has to be a couple of motors floating about.

I see that the 4JG2T (3.1L) will also fit, but this looks to have a ECU and looks a little more electrickary involved.

If fitting a LT77s to a 4JB1 any one want to have a stab at what friction plate/pressure plate/thrust bearing combo I should be using?

Google Rodeo / Jackaroo wreckers, I looked at a couple for intercooler mounts and stuff last week. Brizie and gold coast I think !.

If you go for an R380/300Tdi combo I think you will also have to modify the seat box. That's why I stuck with the LT77. All I needed was a couple of new engine mounts on the chassis and an electric fan (the viscous one hits the PAS box as the engine sits further back).

Gave 4x4 gold coast wreckers a call. Most helpful! (unlike any Perth mob I have rung!). They suggested the following engines also might work:

4JX1 (3.0L TDi)
4JH1 (3.0L TDi)

Anyone any experience with these? I will get onto M&D in the UK to see if the adapter fits these engines too.

The 4J engine family should all be fairly similar, however I haven't found a definitive answer on interchangeability - would be keen to know what you find out.

The 4JB1 and 4JG2 have no electrics AFAIK (or no more than a Tdi or 2.5D). The 2 you list above have more AFAIK, however still have (mainly) mechanical injection.

I see the GC 4x4 wreckers have a plethora of busted up rodeos with 2.8 4JB1T engines. (Dont mention land rover) shurely they will rip one out and send it west, it might be ease the whole prosess if you dont mention landrover and just purchase it as a repower for your {97 rodeo} ;).

They had one there 230k on the clock subject to testing. They were more than helpful, even when I mentioned Land Rover. Said a couple of chaps had been in/past with this conversion.

On the Series note, slightly off topic, my flatmates (who brought this to my attention - it had slipped my mind) brother in the UK re-powered his 88, with a 2.8 4JB1T, with the intercooler mounted in the left wing. With slots cut in the wing were it overlaps the grille at the front exhausting out of slots on the top of the wing. Roverdrive overdrive fitted. MD make a kit for that conversion too I see. Obviously a fair bit more torque than standard, but goes like a dream. Didn't even need to move the grille.

Just bumping this old chestnut up.

Veryan, did you ever get the engine you wanted?

I'm sitting with a similar issue: the old 3.5V8 is just getting too expensive to run.

Petrol over here is moving towards AU$1.50 per liter, and diesel is below that at around UA$1.25 per liter. This will get worse with the Iran pinch going on.

At 5L / 100 km for the petrol V8, I can make a substantial saving if I convert to diesel. In fact, considering a 150km daily drive, I reckon it would take less than a year to recoup my costs and start showing a profit.

But which diesel engine?
I'm nervous about putting anything smaller than 100kW into the old bus: she's well close to 2.5 tons with all the bits and pieces on her.

Nissan SD33/FD35T?
Isuzu 4J?

The GM 6.2 isn't an option, we don't get them over here.

My base spec would be around 100kW and 350Nm.

Mandatory would be a mechanical injection pump.

Any thoughts?

I know alot of people won't approve here but alot of people in the UK have been switching from Diesel Turbo to Td5. It's the last rover engine that will bolt in without major mods. It will give you performance exactly to what you want. 100 kw easy and 350nm.

If you can get one for the right money. (This one is not a good example but they come up time to time)
