Fire Extinguisher mounting - driver's seat box?

Mine is mounted on the passenger seatbox (it's where Land Rover mount them in their vehicles too) and I don't have any problems with it getting in the way.

FWIW - All I'd say is to make sure it is mounted in such a way that it does NOT become a lethal projectile in the event of a front end collision. I see soooooo many extinguishers, mounted on cargo barriers in such a way that if they had a crash, they would get smacked in the back of the head by the extinguisher!!!

Camel_Landy - I was thinking about the passenger seatbox but because two of my mates who are likely to be sitting there are very tall, I installed the Mulgo seat extensions and I think having the seat positioned further back would mean the extiguisher would get in the way...and their bitching and whining would start all over again!

Daniel - cheers for that - I couldn't remember whose it was.

The only issue I have with the back of the cubby box is whether or not I'm going to use the rear seats footwell for storage space and if that space will be interfered with when I open the ExBox and tip the whole unit back. I think I need to have a bit of a play with it....but I think it's certainly one of the quickest acess positions.

Very easy system, though not cheap and need to be tested annually.
Most mine SME run them and so do UG LVs. There are also motor sport systems. These generally involve foam based suppression systems. They are very good at what they do. We usually have an activation about every 2-3 weeks on a truck or loader and occasionally a digger. Most often it extinguishes the fire before we get on scene. Usually turbos and exhaust fires.
The advantage of foam is that if activated it can be just washed off.
The major disadvantage is size and cost. To be effective on a LV you would at least need a 9kg system if not bigger.
LV with these for UG use usually had them mounted on their bull bar.
Maybe look up your local fire suppression specialist and have a chat, someone like Wormalds (Tyco) etc.
You have to toss up the cost, space required, annual testing etc against worth.
I quite often go out with Wormalds and do the testing. On SME it must last 90 seconds.

here's a couple of pics of my drivers seat box. it's handy for tools, jumper leads etc. i'm not sure how well a fire extinguisher would go in there.

Craig, racecar ones are 2-4kg and work well.

Have a look at the link I posted above, that's only one brand I'm familiar with, SPA Design, OMP, Sparco, etc also supply motorsport systems.

Should have been clearer, typo mistake Mike, 1 x 4.5 in rear and 1 x 1.5 in front. Both would knock down a fire on ignition, but fully engulfed you would want at least a 9kg and then you would only stand half a chance if you knew what you were doing. It is not just getting it knocked down but re ignition up to 24hrs later. Modern cars with all their plastic etc only takes some residual in say the air con system vents. Yeah I have knocked out a fully engulfed car with a 9kg and this may give you a chance to get anything valuable out, But then comes the overhaul which is pretty much flooding anything that may cause reignition and where the rest of the damage is done.
