VE pump specs,mines blowing smoke.
My Tdi pump is doing some strang things,I never had a problem with the thing as I left it stock but 3 years ago a Bosch Speciallist in Kalgoorlie decided to play with it and it hasn't been right since. Two months ago I replaced the throttle shaft 'o' ring other than that it's been good but today she was blowing black smoke like it was on fire, cruising in third doing 40 I mashed the throttle down and it left a smoke screen and the EGT's hit 550 degree's in seconds,it's like the boost compensator is not working and it's stuck on full rich mixture.I want to start from scratch and reset all the settings, the air filter, boost pipe, diaphram etc all move freely and at idle starting it under my carport I can smell raw diesel. Is there a good write up anywhere on how to set everything back to the factory settings?.Both the fuel screw and diaphram have been tampered with and I have no clue as to were the settings originally where. Thanks in advance. I don't reckon the Bosch specialist measured the lift correctly in the first place because you said it was 1.2mm initially here. I've had mine changed from 1.54 to 1.6 (it's an auto, as per JC recommendation) and even that difference of .06mm made it sound and run totally different.
It is easy to set the diaphragm to factory. It has 180 degrees of adjustment, that is, if you start at the least offset position, the most offset position is half a turn, and the factory position is at exactly halfway between the most and least offset profiles.
If the starwheel and smoke screw have been fiddled with and there's no records, then its pump dyno calibration time to get it back to factory specs.

I think (I reiterate - I think) that the standard position for the diaphragm on mine was with the dot marker at about 1 or 2 o'clock (which is the same setting as 4 or 5 o'clock). The minimum setting is with the marker at 3 o'clock. As B92 8NW says, there's no telling where the starwheel and smoke screw were. Basically, if it's smoking (or smelling like raw fuel
) at idle or on take off before boost builds, start backing the smoke screw off about half a turn at a time (that's a quick and easy adjustment). If it's smoking as boost is building, start backing the starwheel off, maybe a quarter to half a turn at a time. It's not hard; just requires a little patience and time.
James.

I pulled the lid off the conpensator and the diaphram was past 12 o'clock so I pulled it out and the wear mark on it had it in the 11 o'clock position.I put it back in at 11 and took it for a drive and there's no more smoke and it didn't smell of diesel this morning.I'll leave it alone and do some more driving and go from there. I'm still narky about that. Pat

HI,
Before you go messing with the pump, have you checked all the clamps and hose from the turbo to through the inter-cooler and back to the engine?
I had a problem with no power and a black smoke screen and when I looked the top hose to the inter-cooler had come off.
Hope that helps.
