Not sure it’s a fad Mario, have been driving Land Rovers for over 40 years and there has always been a wave :-)
Got two waves yesterday from Defenders I had never seen before.
But parking rules do apply...

Drove to Yass on 23rd, back on 26th. Saw exactly one Defender or Series on that trip. It was parked in Cowra (Td5 Defender, metallic red) with nobody in it, so no waves!

Been slim pickings for us too so far. Yass- Warren no waves, Warren to Nundle No waves, Had some waves from a classic Rangie and a TDI 130 in convoy with an old Patrol coming into Tamworth. We've seen a few nice Pumas over on the coast at Coffs but no-one in them, Surfies are driving Perenties these days too apparently.
Nice secluded camp spot we found at Sheba Dams

Several waves from Defenders on North Stradbroke Island this week.
I have a Puma and my mate, Leeds, has one too. We're builders in Hobart and compare waves per day. I average three or four. I get really annoyed if I miss a wave or don't get wave back from another Defender owner. I take it as a HUGE insult. It's a great game! Never had a wave from a Disco or, God help me, a Range Rover driver (generally too busy to wave as they're talking to their stockbrokers whilst trying to placate little Quentin and Camilla in the back seats - the video screens were probably playing up again.) - then again, I never wave at them. Maybe I should as everybody in rural Tassie does the one finger wave (the nice one, not the naughty one!) to everyone else regardless of car. We're a very friendly bunch.
In in a few months of ownership only one or two have been missed. Saw two today got two waves. This in Melbourne too. For hecks sake there have been waves over massive spit freeways and all. Things must be on the up and up. Have noticed a couple of the older Toyota 4x4 drivers quite keen to join in on the action as well. I waved back as there is no need to punish them further for such poor taste.
I give and get lots of waves.
