I am going the small portals 1.16 to keep the gearing and speedo etc in line and the max tyre size they recommend is 35. It seems to also be a more commonly available size and will put the top of my headlight at 1190mm of the allowable 1200mm for registration in NSW.

Very good. How few people actually know that. FYI - its as measured from the centre mass of the headlight (for odd shaped headlights). Heavy vehicles are 1400mm.

You could always get a set of good tyres,and buy some Trep radials in 35"

Hey Wayne what would they have over the mtz? I do a fair amount of highway driving to and from trips so that is a consideration. I have also heard that the treps get a bit hard and noisy after 25-30,000 km.

The treps are slightly more open tread and hence more aggressive .
I have never heard of anyone complaining about radial Treps.
Everyone I have known that has used them won't go back,they are a brilliant all round tyre,Metz would probably be my second choice ,the treps are the quietest mud tyre that I have seen or should that be heard?They also give fantastic grip on wet roads.Ask Max(Tusker) what he thinks about them,he also runs them.
