Early 110 county - wheel hub bearing spacing

From the trialling I've done so far, its looking like County front hubs, the LR brackets, and D1 rear discs and calipers are going to fit OK (with approx 2-3mm off the housing side of the caliper bracket).
Definitely no way it was going to fit with the county front discs as the offset is much deeper, but the combination above looks promising.
Still not 100% sure as I'm mocking it up on the spare sals I've got here which is a drum brake one from around '92, so stubs are shorter, but protrusion etc measures up about the same as the County one.

You had me scared for a minute there....

According to the DBA catalogue the D1 rears are the same as the early Defender at 290mm diameter http://mcbclutchandbrake.com.au/images/dba.pdf.
Later defenders have 298mm rears, and are thicker (14mm compared to 12.7 for the early/D1 ones).
That would explain the wider slots in the defender calipers too - not sure if they are different between early and late ones.

That catalogue also has all the offsets for the different discs - very useful info that wish I'd found earlier as it would have removed some of the guesswork.

Hi,

I did this conversion a bit over 2 years ago to my drum braked '85 V8 County.

I used after market hubs & modded D1 hubs for a Dana 60, so I can't help with that bit. I also used D1 calipers & D1 rear disks

The problem that you'll may face is the the defender caliper mount does not work in an ideal manner.

You can machine off the 2-3mm off the inside face well enough as required but you really have be precise whilst keeping the calliper centered over the disk to avoid uneven wear.

It's pretty fiddly in the end as you want to take the minimal off the caliper bracket, but you can't really measure this distance it with the wheel bearing pre-load on.

When you machine down the caliper bracket you end up taking more then you want off. Luckily it's a solid part and mine have been fine for over two years of driving.

Also you'll need to make up shims or machine some washers down to centre the calipers & pads over the disks. In short I suggest you do it with the car near a milling machine.

In my case hindsight it may have been best just having a custom part made to order, with a larger offset towards the centre of the car.


Check Cal's '85 county he did some work on this too.

Ive have a County Salisbury retroffited in my 05 110 Defender,
obviously for it to work in the Defer it has been fitted with Discs ABS/TC.

probably a bit late now but ..
I was doing 145k service today inc changing diff oil and noted the Hub part number is HRC1924
uses standard Defender discs and calipers
