If a 1996 D1 ABS system is the same I'm currently wrecking mine. Find out what you need first and contact me if needed.
Put some new discs on take the ABS light bulb out of the dash and take it to another place to get roadworthy done
Easy job done
I thought the ABS units could not be rebuilt for about $1000 and no longer needed repair by replacement.

Sorry to hear this but perhaps get some more opinions? In fact if it is true, how about trying to import a part from UK? Or British 4x4 QLD may have a used unit in the shelf?
If you can get it supplied cheaper a mechanic can fit?
I bought a Disco 2 in December last year. A week before Christmas, A week later the AirMass Meter, Air Suspension failed and coolant leaked from the head gasket erupted. Despite having a report done. It all came out the woodwork a week later. Mine sat there for Christmas and Year in heap! I was gutted.
Cost me about $4k to put it all right which included free labour from my dad for the heads which saved me another $2k!.
Glad I stuck it out, it drives so well now! Worth the pain!
I wouldn't take too much notice of the 7K quote I think you are being ripped.
The sensors can be had for 75 Pounds each from Paddocks
You will only need 1 for the rear as the kit they sell does both sides
You will need 2 for the front
The disks are also cheap and easy to do.
I would be really surprised if it was the ABS ECU and think you will find they have quoted you retail for a Modulator.
This crowd in Victoria can reco the units for about 1K
With the problems I have had with them I think 1K is a bit steep they are actually quite simple.

Don't despair its not as bad as it looks
bleedin eck!!!!!
more than likely it'll be a sensor pushed out by having the discs replaced, has anyone tried reseating them??? come on any members in melbourne able to take a squiz for him??
IF the modulator is at fault usually the tc lamp is also illuminated, sounds like a simple sensor issue to me.
don't do anything until someone who knows what they are talking about has a look first..
damn bass strait...:(
