It did it very well, even with the 33s, there wasn't much up hill though what there was it wasnt a struggle at all for it, i dont know if it would be the same with a 2.2 though from some of the things i have heard so far about them.
longest towing run i have ever done is this to Fraser island(newcastle->Fraser->Newcastle), we were fairly heavily loaded and my brother in law with his TDI disco(my old one) with some mods couldn't keep up with us on the hills and he wasnt towing anything.

Mind you mine has a few "tweaks" to help out....
I tow a 21 foot van with my 2011 90 Puma.. the van weighs in at 2660kgs (empty) and it generally stays empty when I am pulling it apart from water (2 x 85 litres) as I am merely transporting the vans to shows... It pulls it alright, doesn't struggle too much on hills and is able to quickly pick up speed after take off.. but I wouldn't recommend it for long term touring as I am always worried that if something did go wrong then the weight of the van would easily pull the car into a dangerous situation.. I would prefer something a little larger if I was to be towing that size and weight all the time.. :)
I towed my cub camper loaded with the defender loaded also from Sydney to Newman and it towed fine,it's no rocketship but it had no trouble overtaking the bicky dippers in thier 200 series and doesn't burn oil to boot,I'd go a D3/4 as a first choice but as there is a defender in the driveway now I wouldn't sell it to change. The only thing I would consider would be is the EGT, not that I am saying that there would be a problem. I'm beging to beleive ( after driving Tojo's at work) that with diesels these day's capacity is n"t the issue.:D
So no one uses or feels the need to use a WDH when towing heavy loads with a Puma/ Defender?

No,never even thought about it.IMHO WDH are nothing but a bandaid solution for poor suspension,poor vehicle design,overloading,poor wieght placement,poor driving,lack of driving skill,following advise from keyboard experts on ExplorOz,Caravan World,Bicky Dipper weekly,Grey Nomad monthly etc etc. Pat
